It is with mixed emotions that we say goodbye to Dr. Bill Huval who is retiring today. We are sad to see him go but we understand his desire to be closer to his family in California. Dr. Huval has been the Medical Director of the Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Center for the past 3 ½ years. His leadership and medical expertise helped create a patient centered culture that will continue for years to come. In his time at CMC he healed over 500 wounds and helped prevent multiple amputations with the technology of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. He was instrumental in starting the wound center in 2017 where the clinic earned the recognition as a “Center of Excellence” three years in a row! Dr. Huval is a fellowship trained colorectal surgeon and practiced for 16 years in Florida before moving to Montana in 2003. He also practiced in Missoula and Great Falls until he joined the wound center in 2017.
We will miss Dr. Huval’s expertise but also his excellent sense of humor and keen interest in the overall good of his patients! Happy retirement Dr. Huval!

We are sad to say goodbye to someone that has dedicated the last 31 years to Community Medical Center. Moira MacDougall has worked in multiple departments throughout her career, including admissions and the switchboard until settling in at Billings Clinic Heart and Vascular at CMC. She experienced many changes while here and has many stories to tell. She has been the face of the heart center for a long time. Those of you that know her know she has a heart of gold and an immense amount of spunk. She is one of the best dressers around with everything coordinating including her shoes and glasses! She will be greatly missed by her patients and coworkers. We all wish her, and her husband, John, all the best in their retirement. Rest assured many adventures await them. We are pleased to announce two ICU nurses, Christina Van As, RN & Jack Lowney, RN, who have worked in our COVID ICU Unit were the first to receive the COVID-19 vaccine at Community Medical Center! Thank you to Emily Holznagel, RN from the Med/Surg Unit for administering the first vaccines. This is a historic day and an early holiday present for our staff.
We are proud of our dedicated team members are stepping up to protect our patients, one another and our community by choosing to get vaccinated.
While the arrival of the vaccine means that an end to the pandemic and return to normal life may be within reach It is critical that it takes all of us doing our part by choosing to get vaccinated, continuing to wear masks, maintaining social distancing and practicing hand hygiene until the vaccination is widely administered.
We are pleased to share that our initial allotment of the COVID-19 vaccine is here, and we will begin to offer the vaccine to our healthcare workers, Missoula Emergency Services and Life Flight Network per CDC and state guidelines on Thursday.
We encourage everyone in our community to get vaccinated once the vaccine is more widely available to our community members, hopefully in the coming months. According to Dr. Fauci, To get back to normal, between 75 and 85% of the population will need to get vaccinated against COVID-19. That would create an "umbrella" of immunity to prevent further spread of the virus.
We are pleased to welcome, Dr. Whitney Haseman to Community Physician Group – Internal Medicine & Geriatrics, specializing in geriatric medicine. Her clinical focus will be comprehensive dementia care offering consultations for cognitive evaluations and cognitive impairment / dementia management. She will also provide consults for comprehensive geriatric assessments, including for frailty, falls, multimorbidity, goals of care, and polypharmacy in older adults.
While the majority of her practice will focus on professional consultations, she will provide geriatric primary care for patients with advanced dementia, behavioral disturbance related to dementia, or other geriatric syndromes.

We are pleased to welcome, Dr. Krause to Community Medical Center. Dr. Krause comes to CMC from St. Peter’s Regional Medical Center, where he was the ICU Medical Director. He has joined Community Physician Group and will be working in the ICU at CMC specializing in critical care medicine & pulmonology.
Dr. Krause received his medical doctor from Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, NH & completed his internship & residency and was Chief Medical Resident at The Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, NY.

After 6 days of vaccinations, we continue to see the majority of staff reporting no symptoms or a sore arm. Only a few have have reported mild headache.
Even with a vaccine, everyone will still need to wear masks and socially distance themselves until 75-85 percent of the population is vaccinated. When it is your turn, please get vaccinated.

The Missoula City-County Health Department is excited to announce Missoula County will finish phase 1a in 7 to 10 days if we keep vaccinating at our current pace. This effort would not have been possible without the help of our partners at Community Medical Center, St. Patrick’s Hospital, Partnership Health Center, and other vaccine distributors in the community who have been undertaking vaccination for phase 1a patients we have referred out to them.
In the next couple weeks, we expect to put out several updates such as how those in phase 1b can sign up for vaccination and our efforts to set up a mass vaccination clinic. Continue to monitor our Facebook and missoulainfo.com for the latest information.

Missoula County’s Office of Emergency Management is taking the lead with coordinating COVID-19 vaccine administration in Missoula County, with the possibility for distribution to begin for people in Phase 1b as early as a week from now.
4 Years ago the NICU at Community Children’s set a goal to eliminate CLABIs in the NICU (central line associated blood infections), while not a common occurrence one is too many. They created a CLABSI reduction team and implemented many changes to protect our patients. On January 11, they celebrated 4 years with zero CLABSIs. Thank you for your commitment to patient safety!

We are pleased to announce we are the first NICU in Montana to provide in-hospital neonatal providers 24/7. For babies that require immediate attention, a provider is now available in the hospital at all times; they no longer need to wait for them to drive in to the hospital after-hours.
In addition, our neonatologists are providing neonatology support to newborns born at Providence St Patrick Hospital who need Level II care, with those requiring Level III care being transferred to the NICU at Community Children’s at CMC.

The Missoula City-County Health Department is canceling our mobile COVID-19 testing services for Seeley Lake, Lolo, and Frenchtown this week. On the morning of Tuesday, February 9th, our mobile testing unit faced significant challenges while traveling to Clinton to provide testing to that community. For the safety of our staff, and others on the road, we have made the decision to cancel our service to Seeley Lake on Tuesday afternoon.
Furthermore, due to the extreme cold expected to set in on Thursday, the health department will also cancel our mobile testing services scheduled for Lolo and Frenchtown on February 11th.
We will return our mobile testing services to these communities when it is safe to do so.

FAQ: Will there still be a mask mandate in Missoula County after Friday? The answer is yes.
“One of the goals of becoming a Chest Pain Accredited Center like we are now is to really be efficient in these processes,” said Dr. Matthew Weiss. “Reducing the time from when the patient feels something, to when they're able to contact EMS to the time that EMS is able to get them to our emergency services to whether we need to open our cardiac catheterization lab, which is the place where we can put in heart stents and treat heart attacks.”

Community Medical Center has been made aware of a “caller ID spoofing” scam that is inappropriately using the hospital’s name. This type of scam involves a third party making it appear as though a call is coming from a particular entity, in this case the hospital. One of our own nurses, shared her son's experience with the long-term effects of COVID-19 and wants parents to know that this virus impacts kids too. They were thrilled to have an opportunity to speak with Dr. Fauci directly.
"Lisa Beard, an emergency room nurse at Community Medical Center in Missoula, and her 13-year-old son, Hudson, who contracted the virus a few months ago, shared their experience on the call. Hudson, who was "an energetic, healthy, honor roll, soccer player seventh grader," has watched his health continue to decline since he contracted COVID-19 in November. Three months later, Hudson said he is living in constant pain with constant migraines, stomach pains, a racing heartbeat and vomiting. He asked Fauci if he could help him."
"Fauci responded in earnest that he couldn't immediately help Hudson because health experts are still working to understand the condition, known as post-acute COVID syndrome."

Until vaccines are more widely available, we would like to encourage everyone (vaccinated or not) to continue to wear a mask, socially distance, wash your hands and encourage your family, friends and neighbors to get vaccinated. We won't be able to toss our masks and hug each other until a minimum of 70% of our community is vaccinated.
We are proud that so far 76% of our staff has been vaccinated and many of them signed this banner to encourage others to get vaccinated when it is available to you.
Now is the time to learn about the vaccine. If you have questions about whether the vaccine is right for you, contact your primary care provider.

When Caitlynn Ott of Silver Bow County, Montana, found out she was pregnant with her third child, her excitement was tinged with anxiety.
Ott, 32, knew that pregnancy raises a woman’s risk of getting severely ill if she catches the coronavirus. But she did not know whether it was safe for pregnant women to get vaccinated against the virus — because there is hardly any data on the subject yet.
So when one of her doctors mentioned that there was a new Covid-19 vaccine clinical trial by the drugmaker Pfizer and its German partner, BioNTech, specifically for expectant mothers, she decided to enroll.
“We don’t have enough of this research, and that’s why I felt like it was so important to do it,” Ott, who is in nursing school, said. “I’m so incredibly excited.”

Chris is an exceptional nurse. He is very patient and took his time to ensure my son Hayden received the best care possible. It was difficult having a two-year old in the hospital for three days, but Chris made our stay here better. He is an excellent pediatric nurse and deserves to be recognized. Pediatric Pulmonologist, Dr. Deborah Liptzen, has joined Community Children’s – Pediatric Pulmonology, Allergy & Immunology. As a pediatric pulmonologist she evaluates, treats, and monitors children with breathing problems including asthma, chronic cough, shortness of breath, recurrent respiratory infections, and chronic lung disease of prematurity. Care is also provided to patients with tracheostomies and home ventilation. She received her medical degree from Univ. of Massachusetts Medical School, Pediatric Residency at Univ. of Pittsburgh / Children’s Hospital Pittsburg & Pediatric Pulmonology Fellowship from Univ. of Colorado School of Medicine / Children’s Hospital Colorado.
When not working, Dr. Liptzin spends her time spending time with her family, reading, learning to knit, and enjoying outdoor activities like running, skiing, hiking, and cycling.
