Meet one of our newest teammates: Diann Verdugo. I was born and raised in Southern California and moved to Georgia 2 months ago to be with and near other family who also moved from California. I am married with 2 grown children and love having grown-up relationships with them. I have been a nurse for 32 years and have spent the last 20 years in hospice which I call my “happy place”. I have had many roles in hospice, from case manager, QA, director of nursing and educator, to name a few. One of my greatest accomplishments in hospice was being a photographer for family portraits and We Honor Veterans ceremonies and to work with a publisher to have the photos made into a photo book to be used for community education in hopes of sharing what it looks like to be alive and still a hospice patient. During the holidays, purchasing and preparing meals becomes a hardship, but through our partner Rays Southern Foods Catering & Events, we were able to provide Thanksgiving meals to 16 families this year. We're extremely thankful for all who support the foundation allowing us to reach deep into our community and provide support to hospice families in need.

We had a very special visitor last night! Broken Angels Horse Rescue brought Lucky the Therapy Horse by to see Henry. Henry is a cowboy at heart and when asked what was on his mind, he said "horses". When the Broken Angels team heard about this they sprang into action. It's important to us that all our of patients have the best journey possible, and that it is THEIR journey. Last night was an excellent reminder that we are more than a physical body with physical needs: We are individuals with histories and mental, emotional, spiritual, and social needs as well. Everyone was blessed to meet Lucky and see a cowboy with his horse.

Congratulations to our first recipient Alex Stevens, who is a member of our spiritual care team, and chose to vaccinate because he wanted to be part of the solution. For couple, Rosemary and Buford Jefferson, that meant exchanging wedding vows. The staff worked with family members to make their wedding dreams a reality and as her husband approached his last days, Rosemary wanted his transition to be pleasant and happy. She was grateful to the staff for helping Buford keep his promise to her and the compassion and care they provided to the man she loved. #happyvalentinesday

It's #socialworkmonth, and we have an incredible team of social workers to be grateful for. Hospice Social Workers serve families in a variety of ways which require them to have many skill sets. They connect families with community services, support families with psychosocial needs, provide counseling, assist with legal documents, provide education, and assess challenges and risks for families. Our social workers help make families' journeys special. Sherrie Byrd (SJH Social Worker of 7 years) shares one of her favorite memories of finding joy in the journey: "One of my special memories is when I assisted a patient with one of his last wishes. He always enjoyed going to concerts, but as he got sick he didn’t think he could do it anymore. Arrangements were made with the arena for patient to have special seating with his oxygen. He was able to feel like his old self again by going to the rock concert. He kept things from the concert such as his ticket and program and made a big picture collage. After he passed, his wife hung collage hanging in their home. She was so thankful that he got to do something he enjoyed before his final day. I know when I spoke with the patient after the concert he kept thanking me for assisting with one of his last wishes. He told me: "You looked at me as a person and not a patient". I will forever remember this patient because a little deed went a long way with him. The small things do matter.

With her fellow missionaries, she founded countless hospice facilities and ministered, physically, emotionally and spiritually to people of all races, religions and socioeconomic backgrounds. She was an example of how to love people at what most would consider the most difficult time of their lives. She showed us how to change love from a noun to a verb by putting it into action each and every day. Congratulations to Ms. Sue on her hospice "Graduation"! Ms. Sue has improved so much since beginning hospice care with us that she is graduating out of our services (she can return should she need hospice in the future). She remains in excellent care with her personal care home and wonderful children. It is always hard telling patients goodbye, but we always recognize an improvement in condition is cause for celebration. We wish her and her family many more happy days like today. Meg Hamm, SJH Social Worker, shares one of her favorite memories of finding joy in the journey: "I had a patient who lived in a nursing home and didn’t have any family. I formed a close bond with him as he loved to talk sports and music, and I was familiar with his favorite teams, athletes, and music artists. He had a tiny tv in his room, and it got very poor reception, so he couldn’t watch the football games. So, our chaplain brought him a tablet that had WiFi and Netflix on it so that he could watch movies or football games. But he couldn’t figure out how to pull things up on the tablet. So, I started making very frequent visits and uploaded videos/movies onto the tablet. He was happy, but continued to talk about how much he missed his favorite radio station. It played all of his favorite jazz songs, and he hadn’t found anything comparable. I searched for that station, and created an streaming account on the tablet. This brought him so much more happiness than I could’ve imagined. Every visit after that we talked about his favorite songs and jazz artists, and we listened to music together. He made an impact on my life, and I hope that my presence with him made him feel loved and cared for."

This patient lived alone and due to his health decline had not been outside to see his land or feel sunshine in over a year. I was able to link this patient up with a volunteer who was also a lifelong farmer and an electric chair so that he could get himself to his front porch safely. During the last few months of this patient’s life he spent a majority of his time outdoors and it was medicine for his spirit. He was tremendously thankful for the ability to spend time outside- a blessing we all take for granted each day! I love making a difference in a patient’s journey by granting end of life wishes and advocating for a good quality of life! "

NEWNAN IPU UPDATE: These are the best pictures yet! Check out the foundation being poured for our Newnan Inpatient Unit. This week, we'll be starting the framing and then the roof. Our inpatient unit will allow us to serve patients and families when and where they need us most.
