Though it topped the Forbes list of the country's most expensive ZIP codes during the mid 2000s, Sagaponack, a recently-incorporated village in the town of Southampton, is known as a classic Hamptons destination for old money rather than for the flash of new cash. Like many classic Hamptons villages and hamlets, Sagaponack was, until the mid-20th century, made up mostly of potato farms—its name originates with the native Shinnecock tribe, who called the area "land of the big ground nuts," (i.e. potatoes). Its bounty of unspoiled nature, open spaces, beautiful beaches and coveted Atlantic Ocean access still remains, but area farms are more likely to be horse farms, and its homes—many of which are just the sort of shingled mansions one pictures here—are some of the grandest in the Hamptons. A number of ponds—Kellis, Poxabogue, Sagaponack and Fairfield—further underscore the abundance of water, nature and wildlife.

With only a tiny downtown (a post office, a general store), a handful of excellent local restaurants and a 9-hole golf course and driving range, things are kept quiet and, more importantly, private, enjoyed by residents and guests who seek an unhurried, laid-back lifestyle, even if only on weekends. Many of the area's top cultural, social and dining spots are just 20 minutes away in Southampton; Bridgehampton is even closer, and Sag Harbor is just to the north. Gibson and Sagg are the two main beaches, and you'll find them put to good use by the fit and fabulous—and their families—in summer months. Wolffer Estates, one of the area's most popular vineyards, welcomes each summer with the release of a new wine and a season full of tastings and celebrations.

The Sagaponack Historic District, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000, contains over 130 buildings that reflect the town's history, from its early settlement in the 17th century through two centuries of popular revival styles and early 20th century bungalow styles.
