According to Low Income Investment Fund, housing is the best prescription for better individual health, especially during a pandemic. Stable housing reduces individual vulnerability to disease, food insecurity, violence & victimization, including the impact of #COVID19. The threat of homelessness compounds the effect of illness, undermining access to food, hygiene and self-quarantine options. Sick individuals require a safe and clean space to quarantine from family. Some individuals simply need a place to wash their hands and clean their clothing. Taking part in the national census helps to ensure those in your community have the housing and resources needed to stay healthy and stay safe in the face of any pandemic. #Care4theCommonGood requires solutions designed to meet needs in every community. But, every community must be counted to ensure resources. Today is the last day to submit your Census form. https://2020census.gov
Americans in both urban and rural settings have one thing in common, a lack of primary care providers and/or specialists. This results in a significant access to care challenge. Access to health care services are significantly and negatively impacted by the lack of culturally competent providers, processes and programs. Addressing the need for culturally-specific care ensures people of all ethnic backgrounds receive the right care, in the right place and results in overwhelming #Care4theCommonGood. http://ow.ly/mZ8550BFKcm

Commonsense steps that are proven to help stop the spread of #COVID19 include wearing a face mask, maintaining physical distancing and hand washing. October is American Pharmacists Month and this week is National Pharmacy Week. National Pharmacy Week was created to recognize the vital contributions that pharmacists, student pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians make every day to patient care. This year the Pharmacy achievements and improvements to any processes should be focused on the #COVID19 crisis at our facilities. The COVID crisis created many extreme medication shortages, especially medications used for sedation and pain control. The pharmacy team worked with nursing and the medical staff to reduce usage of certain medications or find the best possible alternatives to provide patient care. The pharmacy staff all worked long hours and extra shifts to ensure proper patient care during this crisis to ensure that we have an adequate supply of medications, compounded sterile medications, and reviewed drug therapy to ensure that care is optimized.

Today, we remember the service members and civilians who lost their lives during the attack at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, which marked the U.S. entrance into World War II. That Sunday morning, Japanese navy planes filled the sky over Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, killing 2,335 American service members and 68 civilians. Another 1,178 people were injured. The attack sank four battleships, destroyed hundreds of aircraft and damaged numerous other ships and planes. The USS Arizona sank with 1,177 crew members trapped inside and lies at the bottom of Pearl Harbor—the final resting place for more than 900 of the ship’s crew. Thank you to all who have served. #PearlHarborDay

The Jewish celebration of #Hanukkah begins tonight at sundown. Hanukkah commemorates the victory of the Maccabees over the Syrians and the re-dedication of the Second Temple of Jerusalem around 165 BC. The Maccabees only had enough oil to light the Temple for one night. However, legend has it that the oil continued to burn for eight nights. This is why the celebration of Hanukkah is an eight-day festival. May this season of beauty and light fill your heart and home with happiness. Chag Urim Sameach! Happy Hanukkah!

Guess who's on his way? North American Aerospace Defense Command has a very special mission on December 24 ... tracking Santa Claus. NORAD, a joint operation between the U.S. and Canada, has been tracking Santa's flight since 1955 when a young child accidentally dialed the unlisted phone number of their Operations Center. Today it is one of the Department of Defense's largest community outreach programs. Each year, the NORAD Tracks Santa website receives nearly 15 million visitors from more than 200 countries. The staff of 1,500 volunteers, most with military ties, take shifts manning phones from 4 a.m. through midnight on Christmas Eve to accommodate multiple time zones. You can track #Santa with #NORAD online at www.noradsanta.org. The site features interactive games, movies and information about NORAD and Santa himself.

This beautiful, handcrafted wood carving of Saint Francis of Assisi was created by Gary Harvath, the father of Saint Francis president and chief operating officer, Brandon Harvath. Mr. Harvath is a craftsman and wanted to show his appreciation to the hospital and our staff after a recent visit. This type of woodworking is called intarsia, which is a technique that uses varied shapes, sizes and species of wood, as well as dimensional spacing, to create a mosaic-like carving with the illusion of depth. Each piece of wood is individually cut, shaped and finished, without paint or stain. He also custom framed it and included a plaque of the Prayer of Saint Francis. #DYK #MardiGras has its roots in Catholic tradition? While best known for parties, costumes and beads, Mardi Gras has religious origins in Catholicism. Mardi Gras (#FatTuesday) is actually the final day of Carnival. The Latin root of the word Carnival is carne vale, which means “farewell to meat”—a reference to the 40 day fast of Lent that begins on Ash Wednesday. Fat Tuesday is also known as #ShroveTuesday, a reference to “shriving” or confession, which was meant to prepare Christians for the fast ahead.
