St. Martin de Porres, Pray for Us!
Archdiocese of Washington
November 3 at 2:00 PM ·
St. Martin de Porres, patron of mixed-race persons and those seeking racial harmony, was born in Peru in the 1500s. He had an impoverished childhood and, because of his own mixed heritage as a descendant of slaves, he was looked down on in society and even prohibited from joining religious life.
He was finally admitted into the Dominican Convent of the Rosary as a lay brother, where he performed the most menial of duties – such as barber, launderer, and cook – with great charity. He was eventually assigned to the infirmary, where he tended the sick and dying for the rest of his life. The pain and discrimination Martin faced did not cause him to become bitter but fueled him to see and serve all people through the lens of Christ’s suffering and love. He is a true model of charity and forgiveness for the Church during this National Black Catholic History month. #FeastDay
