Staff highlight: We caught up with Richard Vincent between rain showers as he was delivering and servicing portable toilets. Richard has been working for SSC for almost a year and said he likes the fast pace of his job and interacting with customers. SSC offers both standard and ADA toilets to residential and commercial customers throughout Whatcom County. Unit servicing includes tank pumpout and cleaning, restocking supplies, and washing unit. How could we be in the portable toilet business and miss International Toilet Day yesterday! A good reminder that pretty much just TP is flushable. Everything else should go in the trash. #sscbellingham #don'tclogyourdrain Washington Emergency Management Division November 17 at 6:17 PM · Don't make a disaster worse for you or anyone else. A plea from your local wastewater treatment centers: If you ran out of toilet paper and bought a bunch baby wipes, paper towels, kleenex, don't flush them. Even if it's labeled "flushable" wipes, don't risk it. Your drains could clog (see photo below) and then you'd be on the hook for expensive repairs -- and wouldn't even have a toilet. Just because it's "flushable" doesn't mean it actually is. Meantime, toilet paper (& other groceries) WILL be restocked. Grocery stores will continue to get deliveries. If you are running low, please visit smaller stores or specialty stores, which may have it still in stock. We introduced you to Zach Ginn, one of our FoodPlus! drivers, pre-pandemic when he collected FoodPlus! with one of our rear-load trucks. Zach enjoyed his job then, but likes it even more now that he drives our Bellingham flag-themed automated side-loading truck. You can spot Zach and this eye-catching truck around Bellingham servicing residential and commercial FoodPlus! accounts. Zach says the best part of his job continues to be the great people he works with and being outside. Recycling driver, Edwardo Reyes, has lived in Whatcom County for over 35 years and thought he knew our community well. Then he started working for SSC about five years ago and realized a job like his really gets you into all the nooks and crannies of the city. That is one of his favorite things about his job. We connected with Edwardo recently while he was servicing multi-family accounts (apartments and condos) in the Happy Valley neighborhood. He gives two thumbs up to our senior citizens and the complexes they live in for doing a great job prepping recyclables, sorting them into the proper containers, and having those containers ready for collection when he arrives. Thanks to this north Bellingham family for taking a moment to share their experience and a BIG SHOUTOUT to our driver, Dean Simpson, for going the extra mile - and waiting the extra minute. Wanted to give a shout out and thank you to your driver who works the route that picks up bins on Belfern Dr. He went above and beyond today by waiting at our house when he noticed we had forgotten to place our bin out on time. He waited knowing the rumble of his engine would clue us to take out the trash. We did so in a quick minute and so appreciate his act of kindness. We do not expect that and fully understand it is our bad. Our kids love watching and waving to him almost every week! Please tell him this. Thank you! #sscbellingham #essentialworkers

The quick response and actions by our crews, kept the damage from entering the interior of the structure. While this fire was accidental and there were no injuries, it serves as a good reminder to properly discard ashes from your fireplace.

If you have ever visited our Birch Bay or Cedarville Drop Box Facility and Recycling Centers, then you’ve met Shannon Maier. Shannon has been with SSC for about two and a half years, working weekends running the Cedarville location on Saturdays and Birch Bay on Sundays. Shannon loves her job, especially interacting with customers, their kids, and any canine passengers. She fondly remembers going to the “dump” with her dad when she was a kid. He made her stay in the car while he unloaded garbage even though she really wanted to get out and help. One of her top tips now, though, is reminding customers to keep kids safe by having them remain inside the vehicle. Another reminder of Shannon’s is to bag and seal all garbage to help prevent wind-blown litter. She does her best to keep each site clean, but that simple step to reduce blowing debris really helps. Thanks Shannon for your hard work and keeping these two sites running smoothly each weekend! http://www.ssc-inc.com/self_service.php. #sscbellingham #recyclingcenter

Aren't you glad we've had a mild and mostly sunny week? As we spring ahead this weekend, we wanted to give a shoutout to York Community Farm and the great work they are doing in the York Neighborhood.
