Miranda in our office adapted a post I found to our trade, I think she nails it.
We give pricing to each of our customers before performing any work without fail.
Oftentimes a customer will ask if they can get any sort of deal or discount on our products and services. After receiving a price they may say something like, “How is that so expensive?” or “I could do it myself for half the cost!”
Take a $700 shower door, for example. Here’s how a potential sale might go in this situation:
I might ask: How much do you think it would cost you to buy and install the door yourself?
They might answer: $400 max, I can get that same door at the hardware store!
- For that price you might as well buy and install it yourself.
- Well, how do I do it?
- For $100 I'll teach you how to. So besides saving you $300 on the shower door, you'll also learn the skill.
- It seemed right to him and he agreed.
- To get started you’ll need tools: A drill, drill bits, a level, the correct silicone, etc.
- But I don't have all these tools and I can't buy all of these for one job.
- You can rent my tools and truck for a fee.
-Ok, well what if something breaks or gets scratched?
-Well, glass breaks and scratches easily! I can’t warranty your work. Let’s get started tomorrow.
- I can’t tomorrow, I'm only available today.
- I can only lend you my tools tomorrow. My schedule is booked with other customers.
- I’ll have to give up all of my responsibilities, and waste a vacation day, but I can make it work.
- Also, to do your job yourself, you also have to pay for the nonproductive factors. This includes any mistakes, delays, etc.
-If I really need all of the resources you’re telling me I do, this job is going to cost me way too much time and money.
I would rather just pay you the $700 to complete the work for me.
When you pay for a job, you get so much more than just the finished product. You also are paying for the following:
- Knowledge
- Experience
- Tools
- Services
- Punctuality
- Accountability
- Professionalism
- Accuracy
- Guarantee
- Sacrifices
- Safety and security
- Payment of all tax obligations
-Insurance for business, work comp, product liability, trucks, property ...
Not to mention the fleet of specialized vehicles and their up keep.
-Maintaining accounts with several top quality suppliers.
-Human resources, hiring and maintaining a reliable productive qualified workforce with ongoing training.
-Maintaining a positive online presents with a 4.9 out of 5 rating.
And I could go on and on and on...
It seams unfair to judge the price of someone’s work without knowing all of the time and costs involved. There is so much more involved in completing a project than most may realize.
I am sharing it to support craftsmen and entrepreneurs.
