About

School of Rock Brick provides both in-person and online music lessons for students of all ages. Our programs, camps and workshops for toddlers, kids, teens and adults make learning to play music fun and create great communities of musicians. School of Rock is the leader in performance-based music education. We combine one-on-one drum, bass, keyboard, vocal, and guitar lessons with group practices. Students learn to play music from day one and put on live performances at local venues. Our experienced instructors are local musicians themselves who combine the performance-based School of Rock Method and programs with individual music lessons to get results for your student.

The traditional approach to music education is to learn the parts and then put them together. Then there are guitar teachers who teach kids how to play songs, but they don't teach the students how and why the songs work. At School of Rock, we provide the instant gratification of learning the song first AND we teach them the theory behind the songs so that they can apply that knowledge to other songs. On top of that, we offer a combination of private lessons and band rehearsal to keep kids engaged in learning and having fun while doing so. . . #guitar #guitarlessons #guitarteacher #learntoplayguitar #beginnerguitar #kidsguitar #guitarist #learnguitar #guitarplaying #guitargirl #schoolofrock #schoolofrockusa #mom_hub #moms #momslife #mykidrocks #musicmom #bandmom #busymom #kids #kidsactivities #kidsfun #kidmusician #kidmusicians #kidmusiciansrock

Phil always worked really hard learning to play bass guitar, and practiced every chance he got. Before joining School of Rock, he never really got any feedback from his peers (his parents always said he was doing great). While working in his Performance Group band, he slowly saw the really positive reactions he was getting from his fellow musicians. Getting great feedback from his friends made him feel more confident and greatly improved his feelings about himself. . . #musiceducation #music #musiclessons #musicteacher #musicschool #selfesteem

There is nothing like being on a stage, playing with your friends and bandmates. It's a chance to learn about music, of course, but it's also a great opportunity to learn aboiut yourself. Drummers are the time-keepers of the band, and with their traditional location in the back center of the stage, they get to see the whole performance unfold in front of them. Getting a chance to play live inspires young musicians to do great things, and to get a sense of confidence that they can carry through life. . . #drumlessons #drummers #musiclessons

The doctors had told her parents that Lori needed to be medicated. Medication for her depression would result in additional medication to counter the side effects. School of Rock and music showed Lori how to take her feelings, her thoughts, even her fears and journal them in a notebook. Lori's instructor helped her translate those feelings into original songs. Today Lori is on less medication and lower doses, she is now an instructor at SOR. . . #raisinggoodkids #parenting #parentingtips #parenting101 #parentinglife
1. ACTION: The “action” of a keyboard or piano describes how well the keys respond when pushed down. As an acoustic instrument, pianos tend to have more action, and have a weighted feel when playing. A keyboard with weighted keys is a good option for students who want a similar feel to the piano. 2. RANGE: The standard piano has 88 keys, as do many electric keyboards. However, some keyboards have less than 88 keys. You’ll want at least 72 keys in order to play the majority of popular songs. 3. SOUND: Sound options vary depending on if you choose a piano versus a keyboard. The piano is an acoustic instrument, meaning its sound is produced and amplified physically. Keyboards are electronic instruments with a variety of volume options, and often can produce sounds like piano, horns, strings, organs, synthesizers, and more. . . #piano #pianovskeyboard #pianobuyingguide

There are many scientific studies out there that delve into the connection between music and math. Students learn that a time signature specifies how many beats are to be contained in each bar and which note value is to be given one beat. Aiden doesn't necessarily care about all that. He just loves the fact that every drum part is not always a 4/4 beat. He thinks it makes music more interesting.
Independent Venues are so important to our student's musical journey. Without them, where would we be?! Today, we give a shoutout to The Clubhouse of Toms River who did an awesome job keeping the music going with their Drive-In Series. @TheClubhouseTR #SaveOurStages #IVW20 #NIVA

Students flourish at School of Rock, and not just in becoming a better musician...also being a great person.
A core component of our performance-based music education is to make our students aware of the countless individuals who have contributed to our favorite music. Rock music’s roots can be found in many genres, but particularly in blues, jazz, and gospel music. These styles originated in predominantly Black communities and were played predominantly by Black artists. School of Rock is proud to recognize and celebrate some of the most influential Black musicians to contemporary music, especially rock, over the last century. As a start, we've added new feature shows to our curriculum each of which encompasses 20-25 songs from Black artists. As part of the curriculum, students will learn to perform these songs and discover important lessons about the complex experience of marginalized communities. https://rocki.ng/3lotZ3h
At School of Rock, kids embrace risk-taking in their musical development. Everyone is not perfect on stage all the time, but learning from mistakes and moving on to the next challenge is what it's all about. That's where our saying, "We don't teach lessons to put on shows...We put on shows to teach lessons" comes from! . . #MusicLessons #RockShow #LiveMusic
Ever since he was young, Dave loved to mess around on his drum kit. After he got married he found he did not have as much time to play. He really missed it since it was a great stress reliever for him. Much to his surprise, his wife got him drum lessons at School of Rock. Even though they were quarantined due to COVID, remote lessons enabled him to 'unplug' from things every week and focus on his drumming skills with his instructor.

When singing, it is vitally important to use proper breathing techniques to avoid hurting your voice. It's most common to breathe from the chest during everyday activities, including speaking, but singing requires breathing from the diaphragm. Proper breathing gives your voice more power, more control and a fuller, more expressive tone. Your body should be relaxed and balanced, with your weight slightly forward. Sing from your diaphragm to avoid straining your voice.

At School of Rock, we teach Music As a Natural Language. Kids have an amazing ability to absorb language when they start young! Your child didn't have to memorize all the rules of English to start speaking. They just did it and improved as they went along. They started by imitating the sounds you made and got tons of encouragement. Next came words and then sentences and eventually they expressed their thoughts in their own voice. Benny really enjoyed his music lessons at the School of Rock, and liked his guitar and vocal lessons with his instructors when he came into the school, After the restrictions of COVID-19, Benny was a little concerned about how his lessons would continue. Thankfully his School was able to set up remote lessons, and Benny was still able to enjoy his lessons with his instructors on a weekly basis.
Just as athletes need to practice to become better at sports, kids must also practice to become better musicians. Playing in a band environment can be very different than just playing an instrument by yourself. At School of Rock we often say that you practice to learn your parts and you rehearse to learn each other's parts. 😎
Music can transcend political and language boundaries. We encourage our students to take those special opportunities to break down barriers.
GIVE THE GIFT OF CONFIDENCE: Greater self-confidence leads to a strong self-image. It enables our kids to move out of their comfort zone and stretch their willingness to try new things. When she was younger, Kate had physical challenges with her voice, which made her a little shy. Her speech pathologist suggested voice lessons to get a little more power to her voice and maybe find a creative way to get her communicating more. She read that many rock singers are introverted and singing gave them an outlet to express themselves. It seemed like Sam's world got turned upside down. His baseball season got cancelled, his summer vacation plans got changed and his graduation from middle school became not much to get excited about. He was so glad to hear that his School of Rock was able to open back up for lessons in the school. It was a little weird...having to wear a mask inside the school during his lessons, but being able work with his teacher on his guitar songs for the Radiohead livestream made all the difference in his week.

Mike was convinced that he didn't fit in with the kids in his grade. His hair, his love for classic rock and his guitar were interests they did not share. The day he walked into SOR he started talking to a student sitting waiting for his lesson. In those 5 minutes he felt more connected than he ever had.

When activities began to change due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sara was concerned about the time she would be able to spend with her friends at School of Rock. This was her community and her network! Luckily, her School was able to do remote rehearsals where the band got together to go through what they should be working on. Although it was on her laptop screen, she enjoyed the chance to see everyone together, working on the material as a group, so they would be ready to perform together when the time was right.
Our performance groups teach teamwork! Each member of the team carries the band. Joey thought that as the lead singer his role would just be to go on stage and sing his parts. He learned that with teamwork they all had to motivate each other, hold each other accountable for being prepared, expect each member to bring their best even when they are tired or having a bad day.

Simple, everyday actions involve a complex sequence of tensing and relaxing many different muscles. Think about walking, as an example. Through practice and time we do these actions without consciously thinking about them and we perform them faster, more smoothly and more accurately. We call this "muscle memory". Developing muscle memory is a key component of learning to play a musical instrument. You can practice keyboard strokes anywhere. Practice the fingering of a song away from the piano to build your muscle memory for when you do sit down to play.

When practicing, don't always start at the beginning of the song. If you always start at the beginning of the song, the middle and the end of the song won't get practiced as much as the beginning of the song. Break down (or "map") the song into sections like Intro, Verse, Chorus, and Bridge and practice them separately.
Being a kid is tough these days. Caleb had tried so many sports and didn't like them and wasn't very good at them. He felt badly about himself because all his friends were doing sports. That's when his mom Carla brought him to School of Rock. He invited all his friends to his first concert and they stood front and center in front of the stage as Caleb rocked out. That was four years ago and now Caleb is the "rockstar" among his friends.
Pink Floyd's The Wall is one of the most performed shows throughout the School of Rock universe. The music is great to listen to, and the lyrics have significant meaning in calling attention to conformity and isolation. Terry was super excited about taking part in his School of Rock's 10th year anniversary when they decided to do that album again. David Gilmour is one of his favorite guitarists and he was looking forward to digging into his work.

Lila really loves music theory and found that learning about things like time signatures and beats per minute really helped her in math class. She heard that Einstein played music when he was trying to work out a math problem, so if it was good enough for him...it was good enough for her!
Bennie really liked playing the bass drum in marching band, but the COVID pandemic put his band activities on hold. He wanted to find something he would like doing when he had some alone time, which seemed to be a lot lately. Since he was big fan of Motown, he decided to take up the bass guitar. It was great to be able to play along with the songs he liked, and it gave him a chance to keep the music going!

If you recently released a new single or album, it's important to copyright your new music as soon as possible. Technically, in order to copyright a song, assuming it's your original work, it just needs to be made into a tangible form (by writing it down or recording it). However, registering your musical works or sound recordings with the U.S. Copyright Office provides enforceable protection against those who may try to steal your original songs.
School of Rock kids seem to love Queen. Olivia always had a great vocal range but was always a bit self conscious of pushing it when performing in front of people. Drawing inspiration from rock's consummate showman, Freddie Mercury, Olivia always tried to find a way to put herself out there, just like Freddie did.

SAT, FEB 27 AT 4:00 PM EST Live End-of-Season Show -- Women Who Rock!
Parents know School of Rock is a second home for their kids. Everyone needs a place to belong and that's especially true for teenagers. Those are about the toughest years of one's life, don't you think?
Our celebration of Black History Month and the achievements of inspiring black artists continues. Because of them, WE ROCK!!
Danny was definitely a metalhead and loved going to see live shows. They inspired him to get better as a drummer. While he understood it was important for him to work on his rudiments during practice time, he really enjoyed being able to play along with his band mates during his School of Rock rehearsals. He learned so much by being on stage, especially how the drummer tends to be the driver of the band. He could never get that by just taking lessons.
PRO TIP: Fuel your body for performance! Performance nutrition is critical for musicians. Whether on vocals or playing an instrument, nutrition plays a key role in elevating your performance. Hydration, adequate vitamins and minerals, and probiotics can play in to stage performances, health on the road, recovery, and fueling creativity. As a dietician, I alway look to fuel the athlete in every musician. Nourish well to optimally perform! ~ Wendy Jo Peterson, MS, RD, CSSD https://www.justwendyjo.com/
School of Rock Parent H.S. says her child "...learns a lot of important age appropriate skills like teamwork, respect, patience - with yourself and with others, social skills and caring for your equipment." Thanks H.S.! Our performance-based approach IS more like a team sport than traditional one-on-one lessons. We teach more than just music!
Our Spring 2021 Performance Season kicks off TODAY! Join us and be rocking on stage by summer. Our season themes are CBGB (music by The Ramones, Blondie, Talking Heads, Patti Smith, etc.) with Monday evening rehearsals, and AC/DC vs. Black Sabbath on Tuesdays. You want to be part of this!
The "Women Who Rock" poster joins our "Wall of Shows"! What a great live stream performance we had on Saturday. Our students really shone brightly on stage! Kudos to all who performed and special congrats to the students who graduated from Rock 101 to Performance Program. We were proud to award nearly $500 in scholarships for students moving up to the next level. You all ROCK!! . . #SchoolOfRock #performance #Rock101 #WomenWhoRock #liveshows #livemusic #musiceducation #musiclessons
All throughout March we honor the glorious contributions of women artists to the history of Rock 'n' Roll music. Who's YOUR favorite woman rocker?! . . #WomensHistoryMonth #WomenWhoRock #WomenMusicians #WomenArtists
Pro Tip for Singers - live show audio engineers can be your performance guardian angels. Be friendly and professional. Respect the gear. Ask what they need from you and they will take care of you during the show. The confidence that comes from being able to hear yourself singing will set your sound free!
David was a bit of a loner in middle school, preferring to just hang out in his room listening to music and playing along on his bass guitar. He was surprised when he joined School of Rock that the other students there were actually a lot like him and pretty cool too. Now he has a place where he feels he can be his true self.
As a School of Rock student, Jeremy appreciated the work of John Frusciante, who he knew was an early student of other guitarists such as Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, David Gilmour and Jimi Hendrix and even Frank Zappa, whose work he would study for hours. He was proud to be playing in a RHCP show this season, where he could bring his music to life.
We welcome Isabella N. to our Thursday Rock 101 group. Rock 101 is the first step from the lesson room to the stage! Go Isabella! . . #musiclessons #guitarlessons #guitarlife #musicstudent #schoolofrock #njshore
At School of Rock, students are encouraged to seize the moment when performing in their live shows. Amanda found that mindset carried through to other things in her life.
Sarah really saw some major changes in her son Ethan after a few seasons at School of Rock. He was usually very quick to anger when things didn't go his way, and not happy when people didn't listen to him. When the show director at School of Rock asked him to help out the new kids during rehearsal, he remembered what it was like when he first started, and he learned that he felt better about his experience when he was able to make others successful in their playing.
After graduating from Rock 101 to Performance Program, Syd was worried about being able to get ready for a live public show with just a few months of rehearsals. He had never played with most of the other students before. But, the show director had a plan to work on the songs in a certain manner, and told the students that if they took the time to practice between rehearsals, it could be done. When the show came, Syd thought it was great.
Another Pro Tip: Gear Maintenance! For guitarists, keeping your instrument in good condition is vital. A proper set-up and intonation not only improve playability, but will also ensure your guitar stays in tune consistently. Make sure to keep up maintenance on the components that we rely on to keep us amplified and rocking throughout the gig. A dirty volume pot or loose input jack can stop you in your tracks on stage. Make a habit of bringing your guitar in to your local shop every so often and let the resident luthier give it a once over. It will save you a lot of headaches down the road!

Bethany really loved being in the Performance Program at School of Rock! It made her better at guitar because she was playing with other musicians and working towards a show. Since she lives with her grandmother--who is high-risk--Bethany was relieved that School of Rock Remote gave her a way to keep learning even though she couldn't come in for lessons.
It's HERE! Our 2nd Anniversary event is underway! One of the things we hear most often from parents is, "I wish School of Rock was around when I was a kid!" We know how you feel. Start YOUR kid off now and they will have a lifetime of music and joy they can pass down to THEIR kids! Just for fun...keep it going!!
Paige had lost interest in her piano lessons. She wasn't interested in Bach and she wanted to play songs instead of running scales over and over. Mom brought her to School of Rock in a "last ditch effort" to reignite Paige's interest in playing piano. Now Paige's Mom tells us that her lesson day is her favorite day of the week and she won't stop practicing!
All this #WomensHistoryMonth we are spotlighting the great woman artists of Rock. Suzi is an American singer-songwriter, musician, and actress. She released her self-titled debut album in 1973. Best known as the frontwoman of her band Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Joan founded the Runaways, who released the hit song "Cherry Bomb". With The Blackhearts, Jett is known for her rendition of the song "I Love Rock 'n Roll" which was number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks in 1982. Her other notable songs include "Bad Reputation" and "Crimson and Clover". Joan and the Blackhearts were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2015. THIS DAY IN MUSIC HISTORY: As a vocalist, Lenny loved the wide-ranging vocals of Bruce Dickinson in a heavy metal setting. It allowed for thematic storytelling that any vocal student would appreciate.

PRO TIP FOR SONGWRITERS: Record and/or write down every idea that comes your way. You may not develop it fully into a song now but it can come in handy down the road. A riff, chord change, melody, or lyric that you've archived may end up being the missing piece to the song you're working on next year. You never know! Use the voice memo app on your phone as it's always going to be handy. Inspiration can strike like lightning out of the blue. Capture it!!
