Connor's mom called us when he was 13 years old. She said he'd been taking piano lessons since he was 7 years old but as he entered his teen years, he no longer wanted to play the piano. The instrument wasn't "cool." He wanted to switch to guitar. The music wasn't cool. He didn't want to play Bach. He wanted to play Breaking Benjamin and Black Sabbath. Mom didn't want him to throw away six years of lessons. We asked her to bring him in for a free trial keys lesson. Our cool male teacher showed him how to rock the keys and Connor watched a rehearsal where the keyboard was just as important as the guitar. Connor had never viewed playing the piano like that. He joined School of Rock, continued to study keys and graduated from School of Rock when he graduated from High School.

Alicia really likes playing piano but sometimes can take longer than some other people to learn new songs. During her show rehearsals she put in her best effort in playing the songs and her bandmates were always willing to take their time with the songs because they knew on show day Alicia always came thorugh. One of the many challenges facing pre-teens and teens is the ability to manage one's own emotions.
Richie would often get frustrated when working on a new song because he never felt he could learn it quickly enough. By working in a group environment he saw that many other students had a similar issue and saw that some of them didn't get upset with the amount of time to learn a song as long as they made progress. Through music we build self esteem
Being a kid is tough these days. Caleb had tried so many sports and he didn't like them and he wasn't very good at them. He felt badly about himself because all his friends were striving at sports. That's when his mom Carla brought him to School of Rock. He invited all his friends to his first concert and they stood front and center in front of the stage as Caleb rocked out. That was four years ago and Caleb is the "rockstar" among his group of friends.

When she started working on her songs for her Performance Group, she found that some of the other kids were having the same problem. Some songs came together quickly and others took some work. Since she figured out others were having the same challenges, it allowed her to be a little more patient with others, because in the end, everything came together for her show.

Through music we build lifelong hobbies
Daniel really liked his guitar lessons at School of Rock and playing with his bandmates. He also found that strumming out some simple songs with his acoustic guitar was a great way to relax. His dad started noticing him doing this and decided to give it a try himself. Sitting on the front porch and playing together on Friday nights after work became a routine.

Through music we build emotional intelligence
Sarah really saw some major changes in her son Ethan after a few seasons at School of Rock. He was usually very quick to anger when things didn't go his way, and not happy when people didn't listen to him. When the show director at School of Rock asked him to help out the new kids during rehearsal, he remembered what it was like when he first started, and he learned that he felt better about his experience when he was able to make others successful in their playing.

Take Care of Your Gear ๐๐๐ธ๐Gear Maintenance. For guitarists, keeping your instrument in good condition is vital. A proper set-up and intonation not only improve playability, but will also ensure the guitar stays in tune consistently. It also helps to keep up maintenance on the various components that we rely on to keep us amplified and rocking throughout the gig. A dirty volume pot or loose input jack can stop you in your tracks on stage. Make a habit of bringing your guitar in to your local shop every so often and let the resident luthier give it a once over. It will save you a lot of headaches down the road.

In his regular school, Oscar never quite fit in since he always had his own sense of style that didn't look like everyone else. When he got to School of Rock, we noticed that many of the kids there didn't look look like the kids from his regular school either, and he immediately felt comfortable.
