The traditional approach to music education is to learn the parts and then put them together. Then there are guitar teachers who teach kids how to play songs, but they don't teach the students how and why the songs work. At School of Rock, we provide the instant gratification of learning the song first AND we teach them the theory behind the songs so that they can apply that knowledge to other songs. On top of that, we offer a combination of private lessons and band rehearsal to keep kids engaged in learning and having fun while doing so.

Phil always worked really hard learning to play bass guitar, and practiced every chance he got. Before joining School of Rock, he never really got any feedback from his peers (his parents always said he was doing great). While working in his Performance Group band, he slowly saw the really positive reactions he was getting from his fellow musicians. Getting great feedback from his friends made him feel more confident and greatly improved his feelings about himself.

There is nothing like being on a stage, playing with your friends and bandmates. It;s a chance to learn about music, of course, but it's also a great opportunity to learn aboiut yourself. Drummers are the time-keepers of the band, and with their traditional location in the back center of the stage, they get to see the whole performance unfold in front of them. The doctors had told her parents that Lori needed to be medicated. Medication for her depression would result in additional medication to counter the side effects. School of Rock and music showed Lori how to take her feelings, her thoughts, even her fears and journal them in a notebook. Lori's instructor helped her translate those feelings into original songs. Today Lori is on less medication and lower doses, she is now an instructor at SOR.

Emily and her bandmates were really excited about the upcoming show they got to play after the entire season of practice. When one of the key drummers, Jesse, broke his arm a week before the show, everyone thought that 'no way can we pull the show off without Jesse'. All the drummers were asked where they could help out, and they each decided to pick up one of his songs and learn by showtime. On show day, they were able to do all the songs...Jesse even came to the show and was able to play some tambourine.

There are many scientific studies out there that delve into the connection between music and math. Students learn that a time signature specifies how many beats are to be contained in each bar and which note value is to be given one beat. Aiden doesn't necessarily care about all that. Hayley played her first concert hiding behind the guitar amp. She was 13 years old and terrified of playing in front of an audience. With each performance Hayley inched out and eventually played in front of a full house at the Highline Ballroom. She leaned in to the crowd for a guitar solo and realized that there were several audience members stretching toward her waving guitar hands in support. It's a moment Hayley will never forget.

One of the many challenges facing pre-teens and teens is the ability to manage one's own emotions. Richie would often get frustrated when working on a new song because he never felt he could learn it quickly enough. By working in a group environment he saw that many other students had a similar issue and saw that some of them didn't get upset with the amount of time to learn a song as long as they made progress. Richie saw that as a better way to handling his challenges.

Jesse really enjoyed his music lessons at School of Rock, he really liked his time with his instructors. It seemed like Sam's world got turned upside down. His baseball season got cancelled, his summer vacation plans got changed and his graduation from middle school became not much to get excited about. Our performance groups teach teamwork. Each member of the team carries the band. Joey thought that, as the lead singer on the song, his role would just be to go on stage and sing his parts. He always loved music and wanted to be in a band with his friends. Trying to learn guitar by watching Youtube for a couple of years wasn't getting Isaac any closer to his goal and his mom saw he was getting frustrated. So his mom signed him up for guitar lessons at School of Rock. While learning to be more disciplined in his practice, which made his guitar instructor happy, Isaac noticed his was progressing much faster than on his own. So now he spends weekend with his friends practicing, trying to be the rock star he always felt he could be!

When practicing, don't always start at the beginning of the song. When first learning a song, it will take you longer than one practice session to learn the song. If you always start at the beginning of the song, the middle and the end of the song won't get practiced as much as the beginning of the song.

Led Zeppelin bass player John Paul Jones is born in Sidcup, Kent, England.

Paul Simon began a tour in South Africa, the first artist to perform there since the end of the United Nations cultural boycott.

With the common bond of music, friendships are quickly made at School of Rock. Elliott is on the spectrum and when his mom brought him in to School of Rock she said he didn't have any friends. During rehearsals at School of Rock, the show director decided to pick students to be a song captain for each song. Max was a little scared of having to be in charge of anything, especially with some of the new kids he didn't know. But he quickly learned that if he was prepared on his songs, the other kids would respond to that and follow his lead. He was the drummer after all, and everyone likes following a steady beat!

Denny was definitely a metalhead and loved going to see live shows. They inspired him to get better as a drummer. While he understood it was important for him to work on his rudiments during practice time, he really enjoyed being able to play along with his band mates during his School of Rock rehearsals. He learned so much by being on stage, especially how the drummer tends to be the driver of the band. He could never get that by just taking lessons.

Take Care of Your Gear 😘😎🎸💕Gear Maintenance. For guitarists, keeping your instrument in good condition is vital. A proper set-up and intonation not only improve playability, but will also ensure the guitar stays in tune consistently. It also helps to keep up maintenance on the various components that we rely on to keep us amplified and rocking throughout the gig. A dirty volume pot or loose input jack can stop you in your tracks on stage. Make a habit of bringing your guitar in to your local shop every so often and let the resident luthier give it a once over. It will save you a lot of headaches down the road.

Take Care of Your Gear 😘😎🎸💕Gear Maintenance. For guitarists, keeping your instrument in good condition is vital. A proper set-up and intonation not only improve playability, but will also ensure the guitar stays in tune consistently. It also helps to keep up maintenance on the various components that we rely on to keep us amplified and rocking throughout the gig. A dirty volume pot or loose input jack can stop you in your tracks on stage. Make a habit of bringing your guitar in to your local shop every so often and let the resident luthier give it a once over. It will save you a lot of headaches down the road.

Songwriter Tip 🎼🎶😍 Record and/or write down every single idea that comes your way. You may not develop it fully into a song now but it may come in handy down the road. A riff, chord change, melody, or lyric that you've archived may end up being the missing piece to the song you're working in a year's time. You never know. I recommend using the voice memo app on your phone as it's always going to be within your grasp at a moment's notice. Inspiration can strike like lightning out of the blue. Capture it!!

Adam had been taking guitar lessons since he was 7 years old and wanted to create his own band. But there weren't enough kids in his neighborhood that were either at his ability or interest level in playing. School of Rock was exactly what Adam wanted. He loves performing and his Dad reports that he practices so much more at home now that he has a reason to practice.

Through music every kid can be themselves. 🎼🥁🎧In his regular school, Oscar never quite fit in since he always had his own sense of style that didn't look like everyone else. When he got to School of Rock, he noticed that many of the kids there didn't look look like the kids from his regular school either, and he immediately felt comfortable. He thanks his mom all the time for letting him come to Rock School.
