JANSEN: Drum & Guitar Instructor 🤘🏼
Jansen is a multi-instrumentalist with many years of experience playing drums, guitar, and singing in various settings. From high school marching band to the University of Kansas Drumline as well as participating in the various Pep Bands at KU he has spent a lot of time with drumsticks in his hands. Much of Jansen's group performance history has been spent playing guitar and singing. Starting in middle school with his friends in a garage he has pursued his passion for performance through playing with many live bands over the years. Jansen graduated with an Industrial Design degree from KU in 2019 and likes to skateboard in his spare time.

An important component of the performance-based education approach at School of Rock is to make our students aware of the countless individuals who have contributed to our favorite music. Rock music’s roots can be found in many genres, but particularly in blues, jazz, and gospel music. These styles originated in predominantly Black communities and were played predominantly by Black artists. School of Rock is proud to recognize and celebrate some of the most influential Black musicians to contemporary music, especially rock, over the last century.
Throughout the month of February, we will be sharing a handful of musician spotlight articles, each covering 10 different individuals who have influenced music as we know it. Although these spotlights are far from complete, we hope it will serve as a useful resource for musicians and music lovers everywhere. #BlackHistoryMonth

Val is a guitar and drum teacher at School of Rock Overland Park. Val started playing drums at age six. He then later taught himself keys at age 10. Two years later he joined School of Rock Kansas City and his talent started to bloom. Val started learning guitar while playing in a thrash metal tribute show. Over the years he learned bass, vocals, mandolin and harmonica. He's opened up for Kansas, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Heart and Jason Bonham. He also has played at Kauffman Stadium, Starlight Theater, The Uptown Theater, The Community America Ballpark, Children's Mercy Park and even in Dallas, Texas. After 15 seasonal shows, Val graduated both School of Rock and high school. He now plays as Malcolm Young in High Voltage (A Tribute to AC/DC) in addition to teaching and directing at School of Rock Overland Park.
