Phil always worked really hard learning to play bass guitar, and practiced every chance he got. Before joining School of Rock, he never really got any feedback from his peers (his parents always said he was doing great). While working in his Performance Group band, he slowly saw the really positive reactions he was getting from his fellow musicians. Getting great feedback from his friends made him feel more confident and greatly improved his feelings about himself.

Carli and her parents were super excited about getting her signed up for the Beatles show. Growing up, Carli listened to their music on the car stereo when her family went on car trips. After spending a few months working on the show material, Carli and her bandmates got the chance to put on a performance of some of the best of John, Paul, George and Ringo. Of course Carli’s parents were in the front row with their camera, sharing this great memory together.

Through music we fight depression
The doctors had told her parents that Lori needed to be medicated. Medication for her depression would result in additional medication to counter the side effects. School of Rock and music showed Lori how to take her feelings, her thoughts, even her fears and journal them in a notebook. Lori’s instructor helped her translate those feelings into original songs. Today Lori is on less medication and lower doses, she is now an instructor at a SOR. 🎶🎵🎶

Hayley played her first concert hiding behind the guitar amp. She was 13 years old and terrified of playing in front of an audience. With each performance Hayley inched out and more & more. At one of our more recent shows, she leaned in to the crowd for a guitar solo and realized that there were several audience members stretching toward her waving guitar hands 🤘 in support. It’s a moment Hayley & her parents will never forget.

An important component of the performance-based education approach at School of Rock is to make our students aware of the countless individuals who have contributed to our favorite music. Rock music’s roots can be found in many genres, but particularly in blues, jazz, and gospel music. These styles originated in predominantly Black communities and were played predominantly by Black artists. School of Rock is proud to recognize and celebrate some of the most influential Black musicians to contemporary music, especially rock, over the last century.
February is Black History Month and we will be sharing musician spotlights of individuals who have influenced music as we know it. We hope it will serve as a useful resource for musicians and music lovers everywhere. #BlackHistoryMonth
