School of Rock is proud to celebrate the Hispanic and Latinx communities and cultures that have so positively influenced music and music education. National Hispanic Heritage month reminds us to honor the contributions these cultures have made, and continue to make, in the School of Rock community and the world. Over the past few weeks, we’ve highlighted some amazing Hispanic individuals, including our own students, teachers, and school owners from Peru, Chile, Mexico and the United States.
Bruno Sánchez Manrique, a standout musician and teacher from School of Rock Lima, Peru, started his music journey at 8 years old and now plays in two bands: Turbopótamos and El Jefazo. Above all, Bruno is passionate about music because, “it connects people with their own emotions and other people's emotions at the same time. It develops empathy among people that listen and practice it. Teaching music to teenagers and kids allows me to open the door to this incredible world."
Cler Canifru is the Music Director at School of Rock Los Dominicos in Chile. Cler is a great example of the power of Latina women in music. She has been playing guitar professionally for 15 years, worked as a session guitarist for many artists and TV shows, released two albums, and was the opening act for artists like Slash, James Blunt, Mr. Big and The Dead Daisies, just to name a few. Cler feels that, “it is very important to preserve the legacy of great artists that changed the world with their music and pass that torch to younger generations.”
At School of Rock San Pedro, Mexico, is Flip Tamez, one of the first generation of musicians from Monterrey, Mexico, to be signed to a major label. His band Jumbo, a Avanzada Regia Alternative rock band, put out nine albums, went on numerous tours, was nominated for the Latin Grammy, and won several awards. He went on to pursue a solo career, releasing three albums of his own. Flip enjoys witnessing how music education can, “help form character and personality in a human being."
We invite you to learn more about what makes Hispanic Heritage month so meaningful and this 30-day celebration so special.
"My son absolutely loves his class. It's the one thing he looks forward to every week. I’m so grateful School of Rock is open. Especially during these crazy times." -Ashley L.
