Here's some with more information regarding the changes to Michigan's automobile insurance laws. For some, they will be very significant so I'll try to provide enough information to help make the best choices for you and your family.
The key factor for most of us will be determining if our medical insurance companies offer QHC, or Qualified Health Coverage. QHC is health and accident coverage that doesn't exclude auto related injuries and carries a deductible that is $6000.00 or less. Medicare A and B is also considered QHC, Medicaid is not.
As of July 2nd, there will be 6 options made available by the State of Michigan and determining if you're covered by a QHC will be a determining factor.
Options are as follows:
1. Unlimited coverage (no requirements)
2. $500,000.00 limit (no requirements)
3. $250,000.00 limit (no requirements)
4. Completely exclude PIP coverage (only if covered by QHC)
5. Medicaid *
6. Medicare A & B opt out*
* household must meet certain requirements. Spouses and residents must have QHC or PIP on another policy
It will be important for you to speak with your medical provider and ALWAYS speak with someone in the agency if there is a change in your health plan.
The new rules come with both benefits and risks...I'll be advising higher bodily injury liability limits on most policies moving foreword as drivers will soon be able to be sued for the deductibles, co-pays and more if at fault for an accident.
I hope this helps...more to come!
As you've heard, big changes are coming this summer to auto insurance in Michigan. As of July 2, Michigan drivers will no longer be required to purchase auto insurance policies with unlimited, lifetime Personal Injury Protection (PIP) medical benefits for auto accident related injuries. The new law provides that insureds will be able to choose a benefit amount that either remains unlimited, or a set, lesser amount.
(Michigan’s auto No-Fault law has Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage provides individuals with coverage for allowable expenses, lost wages, essential services, funeral and burial expenses, and survivor’s loss benefits. With auto insurance reform, drivers will be able to choose from different levels for coverage provided under PIP.)
It will be very important that we discuss which coverage is right for you and your family, as the decision can impact your family for years to come, likely in ways that you haven't heard discussed...I'll keep you filled in as more information is unearthed!
