It's squid jigging season in Puget Sound, so this a great time to think about making calamari! After you've got your catch, it's easy to make it into a great appetizer. Make sure you clean your squid thoroughly, then slice the body into rings. Marinate for at least 30 minutes in buttermilk, then dredge each piece in flour and spices. Finally, fry them in vegetable oil. Bon appetit! πŸ™

This photo, circa 1910, shows two men in a dory returning to the halibut steamer "Independent" with their catch and gear. Dories were about sixteen feet long, and each held two men. They were powered by oars or a small sail. Halibut crews used these boats to set and haul in their lines. Fishing from dories was considered very dangerous, particularly in cold rough weather -- it was banned in many places in 1930. 🐟

A scene from 1909 in the northern Pacific Ocean: preparing longlines for halibut. Crew members spent (and still spend!) a great deal of time preparing their fishing gear, handled in units called "skates". Each skate holds approximately 100 - 120 baited hooks and are attached to lines 1,800 - 2,000 feet long. Today, setups may vary, but the core concept is still the same. 🐟
