This year, 2020, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicted multiple climate factors which indicated an above-normal Atlantic hurricane season this year, with a sixty percent chance for an above-normal season. The NOAA expected between thirteen to nineteen named storms, between six to ten hurricanes, and anywhere from three to six major hurricanes.
With forty-three days to go before the end of the hurricane season this year, we have already had twenty-three named storms, eight hurricanes, and two major hurricanes. Protecting Your Possessions From Water Damage
This picture shows freshly cleaned beach towels and blankets that were damaged by a water heater that failed in the garage of a Surfside home. The water heater water line was corroded, so when it cracked, the water that sprayed and flooded all over the garage and was rusty and smelly.
SERVPRO of Miami Beach was called in to mitigate the water damage. We inventoried and removed all of the contents, replaced the supply line to the water heater, and cleaned and deodorized all of the items that were compromised.
Here are some tips from the Insurance Information Institute for protecting your possessions from water damage:
•Store off-season and other bulk belongings in waterproof bins, especially in areas where there are plumbing pipes or that are prone to dampness, such as basements and attics.
•Keep belongings stored on shelving off the floor in basements. In case of water seepage or sewer backup, they're less likely to get damaged.
•Keep an up-to-date home inventory. Having a comprehensive list of your possessions will save time, trouble and stress in case of loss from water damage.

Power Outages Happen
Did you know that 97 percent of the problems reported to the Florida Power and Light Company were attributed to power outages? Storms and downed power lines are some of the causes.

•Keep freezers and refrigerators closed. The refrigerator will keep food cold for about four hours. A full freezer will keep the temperature for about 48 hours. Use coolers with ice if necessary. Monitor temperatures with a thermometer.
•Maintain food supplies that do not require refrigeration.
•Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Generators, camp stoves or charcoal grills should always be used outdoors and at least 20 feet away from windows. Never use a gas stovetop or oven to heat your home.

According to a study published by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), homes that were thirty years old were three times more likely to have a plumbing supply or drainage problem.
