I was inspired by @icecjan and @birdy_sew_obsessed to topstitch the pleats and then I thought why not make it in denim and topstitch it all the way!?
I also hacked the sleeves with a puff, because that’s just my thing 🤷🏼♀️😅 and gave the cuffs a denim jacket sort of feel.
I’m very happy with how it turned out and I’ll show more soon...

I transferred my pattern to pre-washed muslin and cut out the design. I oriented the muslin so the selvedges were perpendicular to my pre-washed linen for extra stability. I carefully thread basted the two layers together and then used the muslin as my guide to cut the linen and press under the seam allowances with starch. (The muslin basically became a sew-in interfacing.)

Since my design had points, I chose to reinforce those areas with Fray Check as an extra precaution.

.
Once all the shapes were cut and the seams pressed under (there are 115 petals or half petals in this design; 5 tangent rings of 23) I oriented it on to of my quilt sandwich and secured it with more thread basting and pins.

Why all the fuss? Well, I really wanted to use linen for the texture but I also wanted more stability than that loose weave offers. I also anticipated overlaying it on a solid color, but when I got my hands on a gradient I changed those plans. And I wanted all my edges and seams to be finished. (Raw edge appliqué and fusibles are not my thing, but they can totally be yours!)”

The strap seam (also know as a slot seam) is a hallmark of couture construction. Its only function is decorative, but it can add interest to an otherwise plain garment. In this class Kenneth will show you how to construct straight strap seams and curved strap seams for both unlined and lined garments.

Sewing Tips for a plaid pattern layout.
#sewingtip
1- cut out one layer at a time. Cut your first pieces with the right side of the fabric up along with the right side of the pattern pieces up.
2. Matching plaid lines at the top of a side seam is easier than from notches.
3. Use straight pins to hold your patterns securely, not weights.
4. Stand back, look at your layout, check your line up before you cut.
5. Lay your cut pieces right side down on remaining fabric, aligning the plaid lines.
Yardage tip - but more fabric. My rule of thumb, buy the size of plaid, one for every major pattern piece. For example, if the plaid is a 6” square or rectangle, buy 6” more for the back, +6” more for sleeves, plus 6” more for a front facing. 6+6+6=18” or 1/2 yard. This gives you enough fabric to match your plaids.

Kenneth D. King wrote a GREAT article in Threads Magazine that I used for years as a reference. He constructed his Strapless garments so well, his clients are never seen pulling them up. Every time I see a celebrity pulling up her strapless gown at an award show, I think if Kenneth had made that dress, they wouldn’t be yanking! His garments stay in place. The waistline grosgrain ribbon is 1” smaller keeping the waist in position, not letting the top slip down. This article may be archived at @threadsmagazine
My Saturday #sewingtip - take a class or workshop from Kenneth. He knows his craft and how to teach it. The combination is a win-win for all. If you can’t make it to New York City, he will be traveling and teaching around the country after COVID 19 is contained. Ask your local ASG to host him. I also set up classes for Kenneth. Statement Sleeves are combined with a great back! Rebecca @revansmerritt posted “One completed @namedclothing Solina top/dress! This is actually more of a shortened Solina dress than top as I just cut the dress pattern at the hip line. This is a size 1 with the only measurement modification being I widened the sleeve slightly for a little bit more volume around the wrist ties, so the pattern piece measured 32cm at the cuff.

I didn’t have a suitable zip in my stash, so decided to do a button placket and went with these mother-of-pearl buttons as they were the nicest in my stash (the plastic pearly ones weren’t going to cut it for this project!)

I’m going to have to cheat the fastening at the neckline, as the narrow width of the placket didn’t allow for the correct buttonhole placement, so will probably add hooks and eyes inside to keep it looking central.

Fabric was from @lovelycraftclub #thebigcraftswish in Feb and is 100% cotton canvas. I’d pegged it for a potential Solina before I’d even got it home! The stripes are printed, but I think I’m happy for the stripes to fade a bit with wear. Thank you to whoever brought it to swap!”

This is Sarah Boone.
She was born into slavery and married a freedman at age 15.
When her family relocated to New Haven Connecticut, she took up dressmaking as a profession.
In the course of her work she noticed the difficulty of flattening out creases in the sleeves and bodies of women's dresses. Ironing at the time was done on a wooden plank propped between chairs or on the kitchen table.
Sarah developed a design of a tapered board on a stand.
By rotating the fabric around the board, it completely smoothed any portion of a dress.
As a result, her design was issued US Patent # 473,653 on April 26, 1892.
Mrs Boone was one of the first Black American women to be issued a patent and her design for the ironing board is still used today.
