Lettuce tell you about something great going up outside of Silt, Colorado!
21st Century Lettuce Production at it’s finest!
Construction is well underway for the new 162,525 sf Spring Born Automated Lettuce facility. This 3.7-acre automated greenhouse is the first of its kind on the Western Slope of Colorado and represents the future of food production, employing robotic technology to plant, harvest and package multiple varieties of lettuce. Once up and running, the greenhouse will be capable of producing 5,000 pounds of lettuce daily! SGM is pleased to provide survey, civil engineering, foundation engineering, water resources support and construction support for this innovative and potentially game-changing technology application.

Gravity-fed, new Snowmass wastewater plant almost done
Bring Out the Large Shears!
After seven years of planning, design and construction, the Snowmass Water and Sanitation District’s (SWSD) new 2.46 MGD Wastewater Treatment Facility is officially up and running. District Manager Kit Hamby and SWSD Board members conducted a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, September 17th to mark the opening of the state-of-the-art plant. SGM designed the plant’s conversion to an A2O enhanced biological nutrient removal process to address the State of Colorado’s new stringent water quality regulations which aim to reduce nutrient discharges such as nitrogen and phosphorus. The plant is one of only two in Colorado that is underground, featuring a grass roof to allow the plant to blend into the neighborhood. SGM is grateful for the opportunity to partner with the District leadership and staff, RN Civil Construction, Mountain Peaks Controls, and Sturgeon Electric on this innovative wastewater treatment plant that will serve the community for decades.

ECO Trails Eagle to Horn Ranch Open Space segment wins 2020 Colorado APWA Small Project Award!
Please join us in congratulating Eagle County for its recent recognition as a 2020 Colorado APWA Small Project winner for the Eagle to Horn Ranch Open Space segment. The segment represents a 6.5-mile section of the planned 63-mile-long Eagle Valley Trail, which will connect the communities of the Eagle River and Gore Creek valleys from Vail Pass to Glenwood Canyon. The trail features a 205-ft bridge spanning the Eagle River, a boardwalk wetlands crossing, and the opportunity to enjoy the Horn Ranch Open Space all while safely away from adjacent I-70 and US 6& 24 traffic. SGM was proud to provide permitting assistance through the Union Pacific Railroad, BLM and CDOT, followed by preliminary and final design, survey, and construction oversight for this important link that enhances the safety and enjoyment of cyclists, hikers, and mountain bikers in Eagle County.
Welcome to SGM, Jennifer!

SGM conducts post-Grizzly Creek Fire water supply evaluation for City of Glenwood Springs
The immediate threat of the Grizzly Creek Fire may be in the rearview mirror for the City of Glenwood Springs, but the extent of the damage and lingering effects that debris and sediment might have on the City’s water system has weighed heavily on the minds of City staff and council members. SGM Environmental Team Lead Eric Petterson recently evaluated the Grizzly Creek and No Name drainages and water system diversion structures as part of the burned area response efforts. He presented the findings at a City Council work session on Thursday, September 30th which were detailed in the following Glenwood Post Independent article. For additional information refer to the two maps which depict the Grizzly Creek and No Name watersheds, the Grizzly Creek fire burn area and the impacts of the fire to the watersheds.
SGM assists City of Glenwood Springs to increase water system redundancy after Grizzly Creek Fire
Redundancy equals increased resiliency for municipal water systems, something the City of Glenwood Springs has had to grapple with after the Grizzly Creek Fire. The fire, which started on August 10th, forced the City to shut off the main water supply intake from Grizzly and No Name Creeks and rely on a secondary water source from the Roaring Fork River to meet consumer demand. The Roaring Fork water is more expensive to treat as it must be pumped to the water treatment plant, and requires additional treatments compared to the very clean No Name Creek water supply. In addition, the current water supply pipeline supplies water from both No Name Creek and the Roaring Fork River, which means only one water source can be used at a time. Members from SGM’s civil and water resources engineering teams mobilized quickly to begin designing a dedicated 16” water line for the Roaring Fork water to support the City’s plans for additional water supply, and for the City’s application for DOLA grant funding. The new waterline is a critical link in improving the water system’s redundancy and will provide flexibility when routine or emergency situations arise in the future.

Lake Christine Fire Volunteer Reseeding Project, Part II
Prior to the reseeding effort in the Lake Christine Fire burn area above the El Jebel mobile home park, SGM engineers worked diligently with the Town of Basalt last year to design these debris flow basins as part of the Emergency Watershed Protection Program grant from the USDA. The fire’s high heat and intensity stripped the hillside of vegetation and burned the soil, greatly increasing the risk of flash flooding across the burn scar. The below-grade debris basins are designed to catch water, ash, burned trees, and boulders in the occurrence of a significant rain event, and serve to help protect lives, property, and structures in the neighborhood below.

Anchor stores City Market and 1stBank are open for business and bustling with traffic on a beautiful fall day at the new Carbondale Marketplace on Hwy 133 in Carbondale.
SGM provided full MEP design and Green Code (IGCC) sustainability consulting & commissioning services of the 1stBank Carbondale branch office. A combination of existing branch office themes and savvy client input were utilized to streamline the design process while tailoring it to the local climate and community standards. The design features variable volume airflow systems installed in high ceilings, and a unique roof monitor allowing more natural light to enter the space, all while keeping roof top mechanical equipment concealed.
SGM also provided Green Code (IGCC) sustainability consulting & commissioning services for the new 63,000 square foot City Market building and adjacent retail space. To meet the Town of Carbondale’s unique sustainability requirements, high-efficiency HVAC equipment, improved air quality filtration, efficient hot water delivery, 100% LED lighting controls and solar tube natural daylighting were incorporated into the design. Check out the COOL real-time energy usage monitoring display located in the front vestibule!

Keeping us all safe!
SGM Field Engineer RC Saindon, PE has one of the most stunning ‘offices’ around — Glenwood Canyon! He is currently working for CDOT on the Glenwood Canyon Emergency Rockfall project which aims to mitigate rockfall hazards caused by the Grizzly Creek Fire. Part of the project is to inspect existing rockfall fences to determine where repairs are necessary. On a recent site visit, local CDOT staff, RC, and the contractor discovered a large boulder snagged in the fencing. Even though the boulder fell from far away up, it didn’t land on I-70 - keeping us all safe!
SGM, local CDOT engineers, and the contractor have been working closely with the CDOT headquarters Geohazards crew to figure out where new fences should be placed, and which existing fences should be repaired. The building of the new fences - with support from a helicopter - will start in late April. Stay tuned!
