As we wrap up Breast Cancer Awareness month, we wanted to share a story of our volunteer Debra Smith and her journey as a breast cancer survivor.
It’s been over 20 years since Coronado resident and Sharp Coronado Hospital volunteer Debra Smith found out she had breast cancer. With medical treatment that included surgery and radiation therapy, she’s now cancer-free and grateful for the support she received. “I was so blessed to be able to raise my three sons and now I have three grandchildren,” she says. Since Debra has a history of breast cancer in her family, she encourages women to take preventive measures. “Find out about your family history and make sure to go in for check-ups.”

To share some holiday cheer, Sharp Coronado Hospital volunteers delivered dozens of handmade blankets and quilts to the long-term care patients at the hospital. While the volunteers were not permitted to go inside this year, they loaded up carts with the blankets outside the doors of the unit shortly before care team employees, such as Victoria Risovanny and music therapist Haley DiPane, strolled down the hallways and helped hand out the blankets to patients.

Meet Olga Eisenman, a sonographer at Sharp Coronado Hospital!
“I enjoy being a sonographer because I truly do love helping people. My job gives me satisfaction and fulfillment because I'm part of something great: helping save people’s lives. The images I take help to diagnosis, treat and cure many people with diseases or life-threatening illnesses. People’s lives are dependent on the images that I take. In Obstetric ultrasounds, I am able to evaluate a baby’s heart to check for and detect any congenital heart defects.”
Today, we go red for #WearRedDay to help raise awareness about heart disease and stroke prevention in women. #SharpGoesRed #HeartMonth

Coronado Rotary is proud to honor Leslie and recognize her with gratitude as one of our dedicated health care workers who give “service above self” during these very challenging times. Meet Angeline Rusu, a sonographer at Sharp Coronado Hospital.
“As a sonographer, I enjoy being able to provide some answers to my patients for the reasons behind the pain or symptoms they may be experiencing. And I get to use such a cool tool! Ultrasound can directly and quickly show the cause of a symptom without being invasive. Even if the result of the exam is normal, it is still contributing a ‘piece to the puzzle’ for my patient's health care team. Being a sonographer relates to the heart as you get to be there with your patient while they are vulnerable about the fears they are experiencing. You get to offer a bit of hope in comforting, listening and just being present for your patient, while performing the exam.”
As the sun sets on Heart Month, let’s all take a second to breathe with this sunset-themed mindful exercise. Thank you all for taking the time to learn more about heart health with us this month!
