"What stopping the stigma of mental illness means to me is: Debunking the myths surrounding how mental illness conditions are perceived and the discrimination that follows. The stereotypes that exist about mental illnesses create a barrier for those who need treatment. These stereotypes also lead people to view those who have mental illnesses as violent or unable to function in society. Stopping the stigma of mental illness then removes public misconceptions, fear and discrimination surrounding those who suffer from mental illness." — Dr. Sanjay Rao, Sharp Grossmont Behavioral Health As Mental Illness Awareness Week draws to a close, we encourage those struggling with their mental health to seek help, starting with opening up a discussion with their primary care physician.
The COVID-19 pandemic has undoubtedly turned people’s worlds upside down. This weekend we held our 8th Annual NICU Reunion. It was a superhero themed drive through event where NICU caregivers celebrated with about 100 families whose babies were treated in intensive care. Many of these little ones were born premature or with other serious health issues, but went on to ‘graduate’ -- and are now happily growing up. The kids saw all their favorite superheroes, including several “super” staff members who took care of them.

As Spiritual Care Week comes to a close, words from hospital Chaplain Edgar Choc put it into perfect perspective as to why he chose his line of work: “I decided to be a hospital chaplain, because pain, suffering and death are part of life, and I wanted to be there to bring some hope or to simply say ‘I am here.’“ Thank you to all of our chaplains to the ultimate kindness you provide to our patients, families and staff.
Chaplain Courtney Mys didn’t set out to be a chaplain, but instead had planned a career in oceanography. An illness diagnosis led her to add religion classes to, as she puts it, “make sense of my suffering.” One professor helped her through prayer and Courtney ended up a graduate with a double major in geology and religion, followed by seminary. As a hospital chaplain navigating COVID-19, she is motivated to support patients and families, as well as Sharp Grossmont staff. “Sometimes it is being a witness to their own stress, struggles and suffering as well as sharing a joke to lighten the energy of the day. We all need one another’s strengths and gifts to serve and heal.” This Spiritual Care Week, we honor all of our chaplains for their unwavering support.

Congrats to all involved in this tremendous accomplishment.
This Spiritual Care Week, we applaud Sharp Grossmont’s hospital chaplains, who not only provide a shoulder to lean on for patients, families and staff navigating the COVID-19 world, but also listen to all they care for with open minds. Chaplain Paul Mugane has been serving our hospital since 2017 and was recently honored as one of the recipients of Sharp HealthCare's Spirit of Caring Awards. Paul says working at Sharp Grossmont allows him to broaden his exposure to all kinds of beliefs and faiths. “If I were a minister in a church, I would work with diverse people but all within the same religious tradition,” he says. “Here, the diversity moves beyond religious tradition to spirituality, and there are as many expressions of spirituality, or lack of it, as there are people.”

Along with our devoted clinicians at Sharp Hospice and Palliative Care, there are many people working tirelessly in the offices and community providing essential services to patients and their loved ones. During National Hospice and Palliative Care Month, we want to recognize some of these teams, such as our Intake Department. Our Intake Department has the privilege of being the first contact for patients and families as they begin their hospice journey. The team takes the time to explain what a patient can expect to receive while on hospice. Many times, the patients or families have a lot of emotions and questions about what’s to come. Our intake team carefully helps them navigate through this very special time. Even though the team is processing hundreds of referrals a month, they take the time to be present with each patient. Thank you for all that you do!
Sharp Grossmont Junior Volunteer, Aidan Hirasuna is also a member of the Eagle Scouts Troop 362. For his Eagle Scout service project, Aidan constructed two benches outside of our Women’s Hospital. They now serve as wonderful outdoor seating and bring new life into the area.
During National Hospice and Palliative Care Month, we’d like to recognize the Clinical Call Center at Sharp Hospice and Palliative Care. Also known as the “Voice of Hospice,” the center currently serves more than 600 hospice and in-home palliative care patients and families. Every caller is greeted by a nurse, prepared to serve and address the needs of that caller. The center also serves nearly 200 clinicians and three hospice homes. Thank you to our Clinical Call Center staff for your teamwork and dedication. Every life that they have the opportunity to serve is done so with purpose and meaning.

Amy is instrumental in ensuring staff receive COVID-19 education; personal protective equipment indications and donning and doffing procedures; and information on care needs of patients with COVID-19. It is well-documented that chronic stress can negatively affect the heart," says Dr. Bryant Nguyen. "Feeling constantly stressed, anxious or upset can increase the risk for cardiovascular disease and increase levels of inflammation." During American Heart Month, perhaps one of the best things we can do for our hearts is to breathe out negativity and breathe in positivity. And even better, doing so while gazing at one of San Diego’s mesmerizing sunsets.

We are thrilled to share that our Emergency Department (ED) is now a Gold Standard Level 1 “Accredited Senior-Friendly Emergency Department” by the American College of Emergency Physicians! This acknowledgment nationally recognizes Sharp Grossmont Hospital’s ED as an emergency room that provides the highest standard of care for older adults. Our ED has incorporated many best practices, including more routine screening for vulnerabilities such as delirium, dementia, and fall risk; a designated area for treating older adults; and geriatric specialty-trained nurses to address the unique physical and cognitive changes as people age. Older adults visiting our ED will also have access to special amenities, such as private rooms with pleasant lighting and noise-reducing privacy curtains, gurneys with extra thick mattresses for comfort, warmed blankets, and sound amplifiers. Congratulations to our expert, multidisciplinary team members for this tremendous accomplishment in enhancing the patient experience and overall health outcomes for our older patient population.

As we celebrate National Social Worker Month and the invaluable role these team members play at our hospital, we thank our social workers like Amy Sirkin, who works in Sharp Grossmont’s surgical intensive care unit. Despite the challenges of the last year, Amy was there for our critically ill patients and their loved ones when they needed her most. “Often times, end of life care was coordinated through Zoom, and there was a lot of emotion and difficult decisions being made via technology,” says Amy. “I got creative whenever possible to safely arrange visitation, or goodbyes, based on the tier we were in as a county. I advocated for patients and families more than ever while also ensuring staff would be safe if a visit was coordinated. I am super grateful for everyone here and to work on such an amazing unit.”
