"After my mom's diagnosis, I felt my breasts with a different mindset because breast cancer no longer seemed impossible. She was the first in our family to get cancer. I was the second. My advice for women is to understand their breast health. When you are conducting a breast self-exam, know that you're feeling for something different, something unusual, not necessarily something that feels like cancer. Know your body, be your own baseline. Cancer can make you feel helpless. You have to make choices controlled by a disease scarier than you could have imagined. There is never a time when fear isn't a part of your day-to-day. But under all the fear and unknown, try to keep finding hope, even if you have to make it yourself sometimes."

Approximately one in eight women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer sometime in their lives. Men are not immune to this disease, either. 2020 brought trauma and joy for one family
On the one-year anniversary of Sharp Memorial’s first COVID-19 patient, our doctors and employees safely gathered last week to honor those who have survived the illness and the lives lost. Team members were encouraged to write a message on a gold heart to recognize a loved one or a patient they cared for, and pin it to a Remembrance Tree. For all those affected by this disease, we wish you healing and hope. You will remain in our hearts forever.
