In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Gina Grosso, a former patient at Sharp Memorial Hospital, shares her personal experience.
"After my mom's diagnosis, I felt my breasts with a different mindset because breast cancer no longer seemed impossible. She was the first in our family to get cancer. I was the second. My advice for women is to understand their breast health. When you are conducting a breast self-exam, know that you're feeling for something different, something unusual, not necessarily something that feels like cancer. Know your body, be your own baseline. Cancer can make you feel helpless. You have to make choices controlled by a disease scarier than you could have imagined. There is never a time when fear isn't a part of your day-to-day. But under all the fear and unknown, try to keep finding hope, even if you have to make it yourself sometimes."

October is #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth, and while the pandemic continues to be top of mind, we also know important medical care can't wait. We light the Stephen Birch Healthcare Center tower in pink each year to remind our community about the importance of breast cancer awareness, education and research.
Approximately one in eight women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer sometime in their lives. Men are not immune to this disease, either. In 2020, there will be more than 2,600 new breast cancer diagnoses in men. We encourage San Diego to practice breast self-awareness and continue with routine screenings. Screenings can help detect breast cancer in its earliest stages – up to two years before a lump can be felt. Learn more ➡️ http://spr.ly/6183GFQcd.
