For months, Mr. Loadholt says, “Every time I would go on a friend’s Facebook page I would see, ‘We regret to announce the passing or the transition of this person or that person.’ A friend of mine owns a funeral home and they were doing so many funerals. Ellen M. Bonjorno, CPhT, a Pharmacy Technician at #NYEE was excited at the prospect of getting the COVID-19 vaccine. “I had Covid in March 2020; my then-partner did not contract it from me, despite our close living quarters. She and I were to be married in a big wedding on Memorial Day weekend, but were forced to change plans, and ended up being married on July 17, 2020, in a small outdoor ceremony attended by 12 of our local loved ones. I am especially happy to have my first dose of #Covid19 #vaccine on board to help protect my (now) wife from ever becoming infected. We're both over 60, so especially important to us. Hoping for a return to normalcy, and being able to hopefully take our previously planned European honeymoon in 2021!

According to Dr. Monica Dweck, there are many types of #glaucoma. Babies, teenagers, and young adults can get glaucoma. But glaucoma is usually associated with people over the age of 40 and with high pressure in the eye. This causes changes at the back of the eye, the optic nerve, which can lead to loss of vision and, ultimately, blindness: https://mshs.co/ke #GlaucomaAwarenessMonth

With the release of encouraging key data about Johnson & Johnson’s new #COVID19 vaccine, you might be wondering how it stacks up against the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines already being administered to the public.
Mount Sinai infectious diseases experts participated in the clinical trials for Johnson & Johnson’s one-dose vaccine and are excited about its effectiveness against moderate and severe COVID-19. What is most remarkable is that 28 days after a single dose, no vaccine recipient had been hospitalized for COVID-19 or died from COVID-19.
Dr. Dana Mazo explains why this new vaccine’s ability to prevent hospitalizations and serious illness is so significant, and why this represents a potential game changer that can help lead to the end of the pandemic: https://mshs.co/oF

Dear Dr. Shawn Anthony,
Thank you for your tremendous skill in performing my ACL operation. Your talent and caring manner is a credit to the medical profession. You’re a very positive person.

“Judith and Devyn stepped in immediately to assist my patient, who had suddenly developed an altered mental status in the Endocrinology clinic. Both were extraordinarily quick-thinking and helped to do everything we needed before transporting the patient to the Emergency Department. They monitored vitals and thought of different ways we could increase the patient’s blood sugar. Judith’s unflappable demeanor and Spanish-speaking skills were essential in communicating with and calming the person who had brought this patient to the clinic.
Devyn mobilized team members to ensure Emergency Medical Services was able to come up the elevator to clinic as quickly as possible, and then guided them down to the ED. Because of how serious the situation was, it’s probable the patient wouldn’t have survived were it not for Judith and Devyn’s skill and agility. Thank you for saving this patient’s life.”

Ali explains that Professor allows her to do her job better. “He can provide physical comfort, which goes a long way in helping patients cope and adjust, especially when I am doing my part explaining treatments and outcomes; these are sometimes difficult discussions.”

Andres Arredondo, MD, is a resident in Emergency Medicine at The Mount Sinai Hospital who spent time at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens – thought to be the epicenter of the epicenter of the pandemic – when the pandemic struck New York last spring. Originally from Colombia, Andres was struck by the disproportionate affect of the pandemic on the Hispanic community. “The impact of the pandemic on the Hispanic community really highlighted the need for us to place an emphasis on addressing the social determinants of health, such as: economic stability, crowded living conditions, quality education, and access to healthcare,” says Andres. “We worked long, hard hours but we banded together and supported each other. I was impressed by my fellow residents - some voluntarily worked extra shifts, some started fundraisers for the Queens community, while others helped out in departments that were stretched. We all pushed ourselves to give as much as we could. I’m thankful for all of these things.”

It was sponsored by The Friedman Brain Institute, as part of its Diversity in Neuroscience initiative known as #DiverseBrains, and the Mount Sinai Office for Diversity and Inclusion. We are live with Dr. Sharma discussing the Mount Sinai Home Dialysis Program in honor of National Kidney Month.
Each week, 220 patients visit the Mount Sinai Kidney Center in East Harlem for maintenance hemodialysis therapy—a challenging regimen to maintain under optimal conditions, but even more so during the #COVID19 pandemic. Each visit increases the patients’ risk of infection, and comorbidity increases their risk of mortality.
“Although there are patients who contracted COVID-19 and subsequently developed #kidney failure requiring dialysis or additional care, our patients are people whose kidneys failed prior to COVID-19 and who require dialysis three times a week,” says Dr. Vijay Lapsia.
