When cheese is your life.....
Polo thinks he should be getting more NutriSource Pet Foods treats for all the hard work he does around the kennel...... how do we tell him he can’t because he’s on the “fluffier” side of life at the moment....
Perfect training weather tonight.
We even had “Spur” a K9 Crew Fargo student helping out with Fuego.
Some fun before our private training lessons tonight.

Sheyenne River Kennels would like you to meet our newest dog trainer, Kylee Dietz! To schedule a training session, consult or hydro treadmill exercise session call 701.356.0990.
Hi! My name is Kylee Dietz, I’m originally from Casselton ND, but moved into Fargo after I graduated high school in 2016. I’ve worked as a registered dental hygienist for the past couple years, and am excited to start my new career doing something I’m passionate about—training dogs! I’ve always had dogs growing up & loved teaching them new tricks! Over the past year, I’ve helped countless owners better their communication with their dog & improve the dog’s overall manners so both can live in harmony together. I have four personal dogs ranging from 12 years old to 6 months old that I compete in dock diving, tracking, scent detection, obedience, and bitework with. I enjoy working with dogs of all sizes, breeds and ages and cannot wait to meet you and your dog and bring you both to your full potential!
So when trainers sit around the training room they start to think of things to bring there dogs to a higher level then they were the day before.
Happy Friday! Hope everyone enjoys their weekend!
Here’s a little behind the scenes action from today; these 3 work so well around each other! 🙌🏼

Today’s bunch worked on confidence building, leash manners, reactivity & impulse control!
Bear also got to do some scent work and search for treats! Great mental stimulation for your dog and fun activity to do with them! Let me know next visit if you would like your dog to try this!
Pro tip: make feedings more fun for your dog by hiding their food dish and making them search for their dinner! It activates their hunt drive & is a great way to utilize their nose 🤓

Reminder! We are closed for the holiday tomorrow.
oofta we sure don’t miss this part of winter 😅🥶 we stayed safe & warm inside today!
Got outside for a bit today before the snow comes tomorrow! 🥶
Couple of things...

We had a cool visitor today...Onyx! Onyx completed our 2 week Board & Train program a couple weeks ago and decided to come in for a refresher while his sister Rylie is in the middle of her 4 week Board & Train!

Everyone please welcome Rocky to our Board & Train Program! 🤩
He is a catahoula x pit mix that recently moved here with his family from South Carolina! He’s a sweet boy that needs some help with reactivity issues—with dogs/humans in his apartment building & the other family dog.
He’s going through a huge adjustment, but his issues have progressively gotten worse so it was time to reach out to a professional. & we’re so grateful they did!
He’ll be with us for the next 4-6 weeks bettering his state of mind, working on his impulse control, setting clear boundaries & keeping him accountable for his actions. We can’t wait to get started! 🙌🏼
Look at this bunch! Many of the dogs in today needed help on similar things:
-PROPER socialization
-confidence building
-counter surfing
-leash manners
-recall
& then Hiro even got to work on a new trick “back up”! We used the garage door & kuranda bed as guides to help him go in a straight line backwards.
You’ll see Remi, one of my personal dogs in a few photos today. She’s a great helper dog b/c of her neutrality to dogs and people alike. I use her as a low level dog distraction & proper interactions with both puppies and adult dogs. 🙌🏼
We’ve been having some gorgeous winter weather this year 😍 no complaints here & the dogs absolutely loved the training time outside.

Oliver found a clever way to technically not break his place today 😂 such a goofy group today!
❗️ TRAINING TIP TUESDAY ❗️
Let’s talk about Engagement:
Now this term doesn’t just mean your dog is “focusing” on you when asked, this refers to your dog’s WANT to stay engaged with you, no matter the environment. When going on walks, to the park, in a store, ANYWHERE, anytime Fido chooses to check in with you, mark and reward or give him pets if you don’t have treats on you. This conditions your dog to learn that YOU are the most important person to them. Everything comes from you—toys, food, water, attention, etc -- so they shouldn’t be looking to get anyone else’s attention. I very rarely let people pet my dogs when I’m out in public with them because then I’m teaching my dog that everything else is more important than me. Then my dog is reinforcing off of getting attention from strangers and will seek to get every person’s attention which in turn leads to leash pulling, barking at strangers, jumping, etc. So make sure YOU are your dog’s priority.
Everyone welcome Zelda to our Board & Train program! Zelda is Rocky’s sister—who recently graduated from our BnT program— their owners figured might as well get both dogs on the same training schedule so they brought her in to learn all the same things Rocky has! 🙌🏼 Super proud of owners who take initiative and WANT to better there own and their dog’s lives. 👏🏼
❕ TRAINING CLASS ANNOUNCEMENT ❕
We just opened registration on our website for another Level 1 class starting Monday, February 15th! Sign up quick to reserve your spot as spots are limited!

❗️ Training Tip Tuesday ❗️ —but on a Wednesday because I forgot to post it yesterday 🤦🏽♀️😂
Let’s talk: IDEAL BODY CONDITION
Every dog, every breed, every gender is going to look different at their healthy, ideal weight—but what does that actually look like? Depending on your dogs coat length, you may not always be able to slightly see the dogs ribs but you should be able to feel them. Think of it as the feeling of running your finger over your knuckles compared to the palm of your hand. If you cannot feel your dogs ribs, your dog could probably benefit from losing a few pounds, but always consult with your veterinarian if you’re unsure.
Every dog should have a definite tuck at the waist, like a hourglass shape if you will. If looking at your dog from above, they should not be all one size. **refer to the 4th & 5th photos for reference of a healthy above view of your dog vs overweight view**
A huge way to prevent your dog from becoming overweight is to NOT free feed your dog. Have specific meal times for your dog & if your dog does not eat the food given within 5 minutes, take it away and try again at the next meal time.
Below I attached a few photos of my personal dogs at their ideal weight (photos 1-3) & some photo charts (photos 4-5) for reference.
**Photo charts belong to Purina & Royal Canin**
Also! Everyone welcome Winnie to our Board & Train program! She is a young vizsla that still has ALOT of puppy in her. We’ll be working on basic obedience, impulse control, jumping & leash manners while she’s with us. Stay tuned for her progress!
Busy day today! Mochi & Charlie went home from their workcation & Rocky graduated from his Board & Train program! So proud of all 3 & the progress they made while here.

❗️Training Tip Tuesday ❗️
This weeks topic: Stop talking to your dog so much!!!
Yep, you read that right. Stop excessively talking to your dog & I’ll tell you why. The more we incessantly talk to our dogs, the less weight our words carry. The more you say “Buddy, Buddy, Buddy, no, Buddy come, Buddy here, Buddy look, no, no, look at me Buddy, Buddy come here, noooo Buddy” the less your dog is actually understanding what you’re asking of them and honestly, the less they care. Your voice becomes the background elevator music they listen to everyday instead of it being an important cue. There should always be a purpose when saying your dogs name and/or a command you’re giving them; It’s not an option to listen, they must listen when spoken to or consequences will follow. Make sure your words MEAN something, don’t let them become elevator music to your dog.
Moral of the story: Less is more when it comes to communicating with your dog! 🙌🏼
Busy day today! 🤓
Zeus graduated from his Board & Train program & then we welcomed Remmy into our Board & Train program! Remmy is Willow’s older sister, who recently completed our BnT program. Her owners wanted to get both girls on the same page to set them all up for success 👏🏼🤩
& that’s a wrap for the week! Tomorrow, miss Willow will be graduating from her Board & Train program and we cannot wait for her family to see all that she’s learned!
Have a great super bowl weekend guys! Who ya rooting for?
Everyone welcome Lemon to our Board & Train program! Her family is struggling with common characteristics in the breed that have manifested in an inappropriate ways such as nipping children, resource guarding around the kids & “stranger danger” around unknown people. We can’t wait to get started with her & channel her genetics in a positive way!

Through communication and leadership, all that will change; they’ll be able to trust that we, as handlers, will advocate for them and handle any situation so they don’t feel the need to handle it themselves!
Happy training guys 🤗
Zeus completed our 3 week Board & Train program and these were his results! Even though it doesn’t look like it, this big handsome guy is still a puppy so setting consistent boundaries and implementing a clear communication system when they’re young, sets them up for success for the rest of their life. 🤩

❌Stranger Danger-Especially W/ Men
❌Separation Anxiety
❌Lack of Boundaries

Happy hump day from all of us, to all of you 🐶
❗️ Training Tip Tuesday❗️
This weeks topic: The importance of proper crate training!
The first step to training your new puppy or adult dog should ALWAYS start with crate training! The crate should resemble a den and your dog should associate it with comfort and safety. Every dog picks up on proper crate manners differently, for some dogs, it may take a week or so, for others, it may take a few months. Remember to stay patient and to never let your dog out of their crate if they are barking and/or whining. This only reinforces that behavior because they learn that barking and/or whining is what gets them out of the crate. Their time in the crate can vary but we always recommend creating at night, when you leave the house, and when you are unable to supervise them. This will help prevent destructive behavior, separation anxiety, and reinforcing on any unwanted behaviors.
Crate training is going to help you with potty training as well and will limit the accidents your new puppy has in the house.
Crate training can help prevent separation anxiety too, as your dog will learn to be calm and relaxed when they are away from you.
Leaving town? Going on a vacation? A properly crate trained dog will give you peace of mind knowing they won’t be stressed when staying in a kennel if you ever need to board them. OR if you want your dog to tag along, you can find comfort in knowing they will be safely confined in the vehicle during the trip!
Bonus Tip: We recommend Ruff Land kennels! They are a pretty penny but they are definitely worth it! You can buy Ruff Land kennels at Scheels, Cabelas, Runnings, or you can order one from the Ruff Land website!

Welcome Zoey to our board & train program! Shes here to work on some reactivity issues, as she wasn’t socialized much as a puppy so she feels the need to make a scene every time she sees another dog. With structure and communication she’ll learn everything isn’t so scary and learn to take a follower role at let the handler address any problems. Stay tuned for some updates!
All the other training pups wanted to say hi too of course 👋🏼🤗
❗️ Training Tip Tuesday ❗️
This weeks topic: Let’s Normalize Not Petting Other People’s Dogs In Public!
Let’s get right to the point here and hit it on the head...if I’M in public with MY dog, it suddenly does NOT become everyone else’s property. Now read that again.
More times than not, if you see someone out and about with their dog, they’re focusing on training and would rather not have their dog pet or even approached; so when you rush up to their dog, you’re intruding on their space and it can be very detrimental to the dog in that specific moment but it can also impact the dog’s training for the rest of its life.
Contrary to popular belief, not every dog is comfortable in public or comfortable with strangers so you could be putting yourself in danger by approaching an unknown dog.
If for some reason, the situation seems welcoming, at the very least ASK TO PET their dog before you’re already reaching your hand out to the dog and if the answer is no, respect that. Many times, I hear owners tell me that they would rather not have their dogs pet in public but feel uncomfortable telling people no. Let me tell ya, as a responsible dog owner it is YOUR responsibility to advocate for your dog and tell people NO whether it be man, woman, or child.
Checkout Winnie’s before & after!
This firecracker came to us to work on her basic obedience, leash manners & overall excitability. She was always go go go and couldn’t focus on the task at hand, let alone giving her owners the time of day.
After implementing clear communication and some boundaries, Winnie is now able to happily co exist with her family! 🤗

Welcome Goose to our board & train program! You may recognize this handsome boy from our level 1 class; his family is going to be away for a couple weeks and wanted his boarding time to be productive! While he’s here we’ll reinforce everything he learned in class.
Jayda completed our board & train program a couple weeks ago & here’s her before and after!
This wild child came in with little to no boundaries, relentless energy and all the naughty behaviors that accompany that state of mind like jumping and leash pulling.
After training she’s in a much better state of mind. We harnessed that energy into obedience and appropriate play and set her up with some really nice boundaries and loose leash manners.

❗️ Training Tip Thursday ❗️
Today’s a great day to bust a myth.
The myth: Playing with your dogs food bowl prevents resource guarding.
FALSE. It actually CREATES resource guarding. Think of it in these terms: if I put a steak in front of you and said “all right, enjoy!” and then as soon as you starting eating I jerked it away from you and then put it back and said “all right all right here ya go” and took it away again while you’re trying to eat, what are you gonna do? You’re going to start slapping my hand away, telling me to knock it off, eating the food faster and getting more protective over it because you never know when I’m gonna take it away, right? Same concept, but your dog can’t communicate like that so instead they’ll growl, bare their teeth, eat it faster, and snap at anything that gets close.
So instead, feed your dog in his crate. Give him his own space so he doesn’t feel threatened or that he’s competing for resources (the food). Once your dog is done, let him outside and pickup the bowl when he’s out of sight.
If you have multiple dogs, don’t feed them next to each or let them steal each other’s food as this can also lead to resource guarding. You don’t like to be bothered when eating and neither does your dog; so let feeding time be a simple, private, stress free time for them!
Busy day at the kennel!
Luna & Milo graduated from their Board & Trains today just as we welcomed two more pups into our program!
Everyone welcome Veda & Baxter to our BnT program! Veda is here to work on leash manners, basic obedience and impulse control while Baxter is working on some reactivity, stranger danger, jumping and leash manners. We can’t wait to see both these dogs start learning and improve both their and their owners lives! 🙌🏼
& now the first night of our Thursday Level 2 class is in session! 🥳

We can’t recommend them enough we have used this kennel for boarding as needed many times over the years and once the new owners took over and started offering training we were thrilled! We completed a 4 week board and train with our loving, sweet but pretty anxious German shepherd and we couldn’t praise the work, love and confidence she has gained enough!! It was what she needed too! Working with our other dog at home we have been able to work at getting them on the same page. She’s seriously so much happier and so confident now in herself it’s wonderful to see! Kylee was amazing to work with and really took the time to understand our concerns and needs and love for our girl! The simple approach and the hard work done with Kylee and training is making our home much more unified! It was amazing to witness the transformation and we are excited to continue working and having our goals more laid out with their support!

Everyone welcome Kona & Peeve to our board and train program!
Kona completed our level 1 class and while she learned lots her owners want to perfect her skills here as well as working on some barrier aggression associated with her crate.
The big guy, Peeve is here to work on some confidence building, socialization, basic obedience and leash manners. He’s a bit of a nervous guy so with proper guidance and leadership we’ll show him that strangers and new places aren’t so scary.

Welcome Bo to our board & train program! This handsome guy is pretty untrusting of new people and has even nipped previously when people have invaded his space. He thinks he’s in control of the situation and has gotten pretty good at pushing people around. Soon, we’ll change that role for him and teach him how to be a follower instead of trying to be the leader. Can’t wait to get this boy in a better head space!
Also, Odin will be taking a little K9cation with us while his family is enjoying vacation time! They want to keep up all the training he learned in his board & train while they’re away 🙌🏼
