A new study published in Nature Communications reveals that researchers have been able to eliminate Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1) in mice, targeting the root cause of oral herpes. This finding suggests that "Further optimization of enzyme delivery and the meganucleases themselves are likely possible, and thus a cure for HSV infection may ultimately be within reach". Oral hygiene should always be a top priority, but especially now that studies are finding a connection between oral hygiene and the severity of COVID you may experience. A three-month study by a Los Angeles dental surgeon and South African healthcare researcher found patients with gum disease release high levels of a harmful protein that spreads to the lungs, triggering a life-threatening respiratory crisis. The study recommends improved oral hygiene, regular professional cleanings, changes in diet to reduce sugar and carb consumption, daily doses of vitamins D3 and C, plus zinc and turmeric. It's imperative that we maintain good oral health, especially during the pandemic. When a popcorn kernel caused a few of his teeth to break, Mark came to see Dr. Urbanski for a solution. Never having heard of dental implants, he was surprised to find that the procedure was virtually painless and the final results were implants that look and feel like normal teeth!
Steve, it was an absolute pleasure meeting you and we're glad we could help you out quickly! #ThankfulThursday #weloveourjob
A recent study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health found that vaping is linked to a substantially increased risk of COVID-19 among teenagers and young adults. The researchers from Stanford University found that a diagnosis was 5x's more likely among participants who consistently vaped and 7x's more likely among participants who consistently vaped and also smoked. It's always a great time to quit vaping and smoking, but now more than ever, we need to be mindful of the negative effects it has on the entire body!

Xerostomia, or dry mouth, can be a symptom of Type 2 Diabetes. When a person has Type 2 Diabetes, the lack of saliva can allows glucose and bacteria to build up in the mouth. This can cause a build-up of plaque and ultimately lead to more severe dental problems such as cavities, thrush, periodontal disease, and sometimes even tooth loss. If you're experiencing chronic dry mouth, talk to your hygienists, dentist, or other healthcare provider right away. It's National Dental Hygiene Month and we wanted to introduce a few of our hygiene super stars over the next couple of weeks! If you haven't had the pleasure of meeting her, this is Stephanie. Ever since her childhood, Stephanie has always had a passion of meeting new people and learning their stories, which is what drew her to dental hygiene. She graduated from the University of New England (yay, Maine!) with a Bachelor's Degree in Dental Hygiene. Recently, she started pursuing her Master's Degree with a long term goal of teaching other rising dental hygienists. She's also passionate about getting to know her patients and arming them with the knowledge they need to achieve the best oral health! In her free time she enjoys spending time with her husband, their two daughters and two dogs.
... A bunch of real pros ... That's an incredible compliment, thank you William! We always keep safety and comfort in mind!

If you're suddenly experiencing bad breath, dry mouth, bleeding gums, more cavities and mouth sores than usual, you could have what's been deemed "mask mouth". This is caused by wearing a facial mask for extended periods of time. While the benefits of wearing a mask during this pandemic far outweigh the side effects, there are some simple things you can do to help prevent mask mouth. For more information and additional prevention measures, check out this article: https://www.colgate.com/en-us/oral-health/threats-to-dental-health/what-is-mask-mouth

We've always been a very clean and sterile office, but now we take even more precautions, such as air disinfecting machines in every room, fogging machines that kill the SARS-COV2 and other germs, and all the PPE and disinfectant you can imagine! #covidsafe #disingfected #thankfulthursday #covidprecautions #dentistryismypassion

Dental implants and the crown that's placed on top, look, act and feel like real teeth. The care for a dental implant is the same as well. Brush twice daily, floss daily and see your dental professional at least twice a year. Even if you have a full arch prosthetic, also known as an implant secured denture, you still need to have your teeth and gums cleaned by a dental professional to ensure the health of your entire mouth and body! https://www.shorelineperio.com/how-to-care-for-your-dental-implants/?fbclid=IwAR0IL0LOk1XSrNklEhX7XsnbrKTcFNkHHEvQo6qfVZ-ehAd76d6X_c2biiE #themoreyouknow #oralheathtips
