A new study published in Nature Communications reveals that researchers have been able to eliminate Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1) in mice, targeting the root cause of oral herpes. This finding suggests that "Further optimization of enzyme delivery and the meganucleases themselves are likely possible, and thus a cure for HSV infection may ultimately be within reach". Oral hygiene should always be a top priority, but especially now that studies are finding a connection between oral hygiene and the severity of COVID you may experience. A three-month study by a Los Angeles dental surgeon and South African healthcare researcher found patients with gum disease release high levels of a harmful protein that spreads to the lungs, triggering a life-threatening respiratory crisis. The study recommends improved oral hygiene, regular professional cleanings, changes in diet to reduce sugar and carb consumption, daily doses of vitamins D3 and C, plus zinc and turmeric. It's imperative that we maintain good oral health, especially during the pandemic.

A recent study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health found that vaping is linked to a substantially increased risk of COVID-19 among teenagers and young adults.The researchers from Stanford University found that a diagnosis was 5x's more likely among participants who consistently vaped and 7x's more likely among participants who consistently vaped and also smoked. Ever since her childhood, Stephanie has always had a passion of meeting new people and learning their stories, which is what drew her to dental hygiene. She graduated from the University of New England (yay, Maine!) with a Bachelor's Degree in Dental Hygiene. Recently, she started pursuing her Master's Degree with a long term goal of teaching other rising dental hygienists. She's also passionate about getting to know her patients and arming them with the knowledge they need to achieve the best oral health! In her free time she enjoys spending time with her husband, their two daughters and two dogs.
