Happy birthday, Don! We love celebrating you!
Introducing Al Stauderman! Al was born in Teaneck New Jersey in December, 1936. His dad was a pastor at St. Paul Lutheran Church; his mom was an artist. As a child, he wrote and distributed a neighborhood newsletter. He also commuted into New York City as a young teenager to appear in live television shows, including Studio One, Mama, and others. His family moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when his father became associate editor of The Lutheran magazine (later the editor-in-chief). He graduated from Cheltenham High School in 1954 and attended Syracuse University as a radio/television major, graduating in 1958. While there he hosted a weekly radio show called “Meet The Students.” He was also president of his social fraternity, Delta Upsilon. Having completed ROTC, he went to Ft. Devens, Massachusetts as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Security Agency and was posted in early 1959 to Germany for active duty. His was assigned to lead a small security team permanently stationed in Orléans, France. He married Helen Layton in December, 1958 and retired from the Army Reserve in 1965 as a Captain. He moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1964 as a television production manager at Procter & Gamble. When he left in 1982 he had become the Associate Manager of the Production Department. He moved to Wilton, Connecticut in 1982 and with two associates founded a consulting company in television advertising cost control in 1985. He retired in 2014, but Bird Bonette Stauderman still exists today with headquarters in Westport, Connecticut. BBS (as it is known) has associates in China, Europe, South America and Australia. Al traveled extensively to these venues during the 30 years he was the chairman of the company. Open heart surgery in 2013 and a stroke in 2015 resulted in vascular dementia, which led to his relocation to Washington, DC, where two of his three children live. He is an avid sailor and sports car enthusiast, and was on many local boards and commissions in his town of Wilton, CT. An active member of the ELCA for many years he served as president of two congregations and was involved in the historical society of Wilton. And he makes good Manhattans!!

Today, we are excited to highlight one of our Washington residents, Gene Adams! Born and raised in Philadelphia, Gene was raised in classic Italian family. His father ran a produce business on the nearby docks. After high school, he joined the Army and was stationed in the remote outpost of Fairbanks Alaska. Breaking the Army rule of “never volunteer,” he raised his hand when asked who could type – and was made the company clerk -- which helped him avoid some, but not all, of the difficult duty in the rugged Alaska winters. Good Italian food from home helped keep up his spirits. After Army service, Gene returned to Philadelphia and attended Drexel University on the GI bill. He met his future wife, Elaine, and graduated with a degree in business management. He married, and moved to San Francisco– driving across the country with all of their belongings in a VW Beetle. After living the early ‘60s in San Francisco, his career brought him back to the Philadelphia area – to work, fittingly enough, for Volkswagen of America. Gene spent more than 30 years at VW, climbing the corporate ladder to become a regional manager – in charge of VW dealerships in 3 Mid-Atlantic States. Gene is a kind man, who always has a smile for everybody. But he also has a wicked sense of humor. He makes friends easily, and enjoys a good party. He’s a great cook, a lover of Italian food, and he makes a mean Beef Bolognese. He loves theatre – big production musicals to be more precise – and has seen countless shows on Broadway. He also enjoys movies and television – his trivia knowledge of old movies is unparalleled. A gymnast in high school, he’s an excellent dancer (ask him about his tap dancing class) and knows the words to more show tunes than anyone can count. Gene also loves to travel – he’s been to Puerto Rico countless times, Italy, Mexico, England, Germany, Canada, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela. Gene always loved the ocean and upon retirement moved to Fort Lauderdale, FL where he had vacationed for decades. Gene moved to Virginia last year to be closer to his son, Doug. He joined the Silverado community in January 2020.

Some of our residents expressed interest in making their voice heard this year, so we found a creative way to make a mock poll just for them. We encourage our residents to engage in current events through discussion and through action. This is yet another example of how we foster normalization and maintain quality of life.
Introducing Frances! Frances Ball is from Kilmarnock, Virginia which is in the Northern Neck of Virginia. She is an only child who always loved school and was a very smart child. This carried over with her as she attended high school and Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA where she received a BS in Music Education and a M.Ed. in Education from Howard University in Washington, DC. Upon graduating from VSU in 1968, she lived in Arlington, VA until she could no longer stay alone. Frances was an elementary music teacher in the District of Columbia Public Schools where she retired after 34 years. Frances taught private piano lessons to children and adults. After retiring, she served as a substitute teacher in Arlington County Public Schools and taught evening classes in Fairfax County Public Schools. Frances is a very sweet person with a quiet demeanor. She never married and has no children of her own but she does have two godchildren. She enjoyed teaching and especially liked teaching piano to elementary school students and adults and being around people. She has always been more of a listener than a talker. Frances use to enjoy writing poetry and writing. However, she never published any of her works. She enjoys watching TV; especially the Steve Harvey shows, old movies, and weekly TV programs. Her favorite music is Jazz, R&B, and Classical. Her favorite music artists are Kenny G, Prince, Motown Sounds, and Aretha Franklin. In church and college Frances was active in the choir. Frances enjoyed traveling. Her favorite trips were to Hawaii and the Bahamas. Of course, she always enjoyed shopping in New York and visiting Florida. Her pastime included attending fashion shows, listening to music, and attending musical performances and plays at the Kennedy Center. She loves to listen to other people talk even though now she doesn’t contribute to the conversation. We have found that Frances stays to herself and does not bother anyone. She has an even temperament and enjoys being around people. There are many things that Frances use to enjoy doing but cannot do now. She has to be encouraged to move around and helped with everything that she does. She enjoys eating and will eat almost anything; she’s not too fond of oatmeal, in fact, she would never prepare it for herself. She does like “Happy Hour”; especially a glass of wine now and then. She usually goes with the flow of things.
