One of the provisions in the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement Act (SECURE ACT) modified the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) rules.
Please forward this to anyone you know who has an IRA or 401k and is age 60 or older or is helping someone over the age of 60 such as a friend or family member so they can start planning accordingly.
Failing to plan for RMDs can result in massive IRS penalties and Social Security Benefits being subject to unnecessary taxes.
The deadlines for RMDs are the following:
Turned 72 in 2020 (Birthday of 1/1/1948 – 12/31/1948)
1. If you deferred your first RMD you have until April 1 of 2021 to take your first RMD.
2. You must take your 2 nd RMD by 12/31/2021.
Turned 72 in 2021 (Birthday of 1/1/1949 – 12/31/1949
1. You may take your first RMD by 12/31/2021 or defer your first RMD to April 1 of 2022.
2. You must take your 2 nd RMD by 12/31/2022.
