We have been watching the developing news regarding the Covid-19 Coronavirus pandemic and monitoring closely the recommendations of health officials at both the State and Federal level. At Sloan Law Firm, our attorneys and staff are family and, like you, our number one priority is to keep our family safe and healthy. For that reason, beginning Monday, March 16, 2020, many of our attorneys and staff will be working remotely to the extent they are able while still accommodating necessary court appearances and client matters. Our offices are equipped with necessary technology to permit access to email and secure access to electronic client information so that we can continue to meet our clients’ needs. In the meantime, our offices will continue to operate daily from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., we will routinely disinfect high traffic areas in our offices, and will make hand sanitizer and hand soap available to anyone who needs them.
To the greatest extent possible, we ask that all communications be made via email or phone. We can also arrange for video teleconferencing and for document delivery and exchange as necessary. During this time, our Lawrence office will be accessible by appointment only and we ask that if you need to see someone in our Topeka office that you call in advance and we will do our best to accommodate. Of course, if you are ill or are have reason to believe that you have been exposed to the Coronavirus, please reschedule your appointment or contact us about changing your appointment to a telephone or video conference.
We will continue to monitor for court closures and keep our clients apprised of scheduling changes. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we all navigate this new and uncharted territory.
Our offices will be closed on Friday, July 3 in observance of Independence Day. Have a safe and happy holiday and remember to check your local ordinances before purchasing or using fireworks!

Today Sloan Attorneys Emily Hartz and Krystal Vokins obtained a favorable ruling for their client at the Kansas Court of Appeals. Emily and Krystal represented a dad in a high-conflict, interstate custody dispute. After a lengthy hearing, the District Court maintained primary residential custody with mom. At the Court of Appeals, Emily and Krystal argued that the Court’s decision was not supported by the facts in the case and constituted an abuse of discretion. The Court of Appeals agreed. It is a bittersweet end to October at Sloan Law Firm as we bid adieu to Krystal Vokins. Krystal joined the firm in 2018 and has been a tremendous asset with her research and briefing talents and ability to tackle complex legal issues. She leaves the firm to join the Kansas Disciplinary Administrator’s Office as a Deputy Disciplinary Administrator. We are sad to see Krystal go, but are excited for her new adventure and confident she will excel in her new role! Best wishes, Krystal!
Thank you to all those who have served. We honor you today on Veteran's Day.

This year, perhaps more than ever, we are thankful for the opportunity to help our friends and neighbors with challenges big and small. Wishing everyone a healthy and safe Thanksgiving.
Our offices will be closing today at noon and will remain closed through the holiday weekend so our attorneys and staff can celebrate with their families. May your holidays be warm, happy and safe.
We are sad to announce the departure of Emily Hartz at the end of this year. Emily joined Sloan Law Firm in 2010 and for the past 10 years has served clients as an advisor, advocate, guardian ad litem and mediator. We will miss her terribly but are proud to see all that she accomplishes in her new role leading a special victims unit within the Douglas County District Attorney's office for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. Join us in thanking Emily for all her work over the last ten years and wishing her well in her next adventure!

The IRS has extended the 2020 income tax return filing deadline for individual taxpayers from April 15 to May 17, 2021. There are no forms necessary for the extension and penalties and interest on amounts due will not begin to accrue until after May 17. However, the federal postponement DOES NOT change the deadline for your state return. You can read more about this extension at the link below.
