Caleb spent his childhood in Fargo, North Dakota tinkering with anything and everything he could find. That interest drove him to earn a degree in Chemical Engineering from The Cooper Union, a small school in New York City.
In his dorm room, Caleb had a Dolby 5.1 sound system with speakers twist-tied to his bunk bed. He relied on his desktop computer monitor to complete the system.
Soon Caleb found a roommate and rented a 400 square foot apartment. One of his first purchases for the apartment was an early HD television, a discounted floor model with an approximate weight of 200 pounds. After wrestling the very heavy piece of equipment back into his apartment, Caleb set about connecting it to his computer.
Background
In the early days, this was a challenge. He had to build a converter box because the input / outputs didn't match.
Lacking funds for a cable subscription, Caleb and his roommate were early pioneers of cord-cutting and signed up for a Netflix DVD subscription in 2003.
Combined with their Columbia House DVD club membership, Caleb and his roommate had plenty of movies to watch in between other college age "activities".
Caleb's interest in home entertainment steadily grew into a passion as his college set up grew to a full fledged media center. One remote with easy control of a television and multiple sources with no visible cords or twist-ties. A library of movies all accessible by scrolling through cover art - no disc switching.
Caleb began installing smart switches in his home in 2010, the early days of home automation. The word "smart" is strong for the early devices (as his wife will tell you).
Current home automation and entertainment systems are effective and easy to use. They have come a long way since Caleb's earliest ventures in the area. Caleb's living room is voice controlled, to the love of his four-year-old who enjoys asking the system to play music from Disney's Frozen and turn lights on. Additionally, the lights are scheduled to turn on as the sun sets. Caleb and his wife even receive a text message to alert them the laundry is finished.
Caleb founded SmartHouse Solutions to share his passion with the community and show people how powerful modern systems have become. A well-designed home automation and entertainment system will make your life easier.
