Did you know an estimated one in five adults over 50 years old (at least 8 million people) is affected by isolation? Prolonged isolation can be as bad for your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Older adults who describe themselves as lonely have a 59% greater risk of functional decline. We need social connections to thrive, no matter our age. The good news is that, with this greater awareness, we can take steps to maintain and strengthen our connections. There are several ways to stay connected, which include: • Discuss moving to a senior living community • Schedule a time each day to call a friend • Stay physically active and exercise by walking or lifting weights • Check out faith-based organizations for spiritual engagement • Get involved in your community by taking on a cause If you’re feeling isolated, we suggest speaking with your physician. It’s also important to let your family know how you feel. Solstice at Palatine has resources for you – we are here to help! Feel free to call (847) 991-4700 and ask for Kelly, or email PalatineDSM@solsticeseniorliving.com.

It’s time for another Wellness Wednesday! It is very important for seniors to have proper nutrition and hydration. Eating whole foods, like lean meats, fish, vegetables and fruits, is essential and helps fight against nutrient deficiencies. Some of the nutrients that older adults need in large quantities include calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B12 and protein. The consequences of dehydration in older adults can be serious. The good news is dehydration can be easily prevented if you know what to look for. There are several signs of dehydration, including cracked lips, dry mouth, dry skin, particularly in the armpits, and less frequent urination than normal. It is important to stay hydrated for temperature regulation, delivery of nutrients to cells, blood oxygen circulation, skin hydration, cognitive function and more! Create routines and work with your physician to see how much water works for you, watch for the signs of dehydration, and continue to stay hydrated for wellness!

One of our associates has tested positive for COVID-19. The health and safety of our residents is our top priority, and we are following CDC protocols and working with our local department of health. We are treating the situation with extreme caution, as we would any contagious virus or infection. We continue to monitor our residents and associates for signs and symptoms and are following local public health recommendations regarding the cancellation of group activities and are serving all meals in residents’ apartments. We are committed to bringing activities to our residents to keep them active and engaged during this time. Please visit our website for more information: https://ssl-updates.com/updates/
It’s time for another Wellness Wednesday! As we are spending more time in our homes, let's talk about staying safe and active as much as we can! According to the CDC, at least 285,000 older adults are admitted to the hospital due to hip fractures caused by falls every year. Data shows that every fifth fall results in a severe injury but the vast majority of falls can be prevented by taking the right precautions. Let’s see how you can reduce the risk of fall-related accidents! Ways that you can prevent falls Include: Keep home and pathways well-lit and not cluttered. Avoid slips on smooth or wet surfaces. Non-slip mats and non-slip shoes are the best for preventing falls! Use safety grab bars, toilet risers, canes, walkers and hand rails as needed, especially getting up in the middle of the night. Getting vision and hearing checked once a year. Keep moving and eat a healthy balanced diet. Also, be sure to check out HealthPro Heritage’s free balance screening!
