If you know of any students that are not yet enrolled in high school, our partner DCI (Diploma & Careers Institute) that SOS Learning Lab, LLC provides support services for, has a few spots left. This is a State of Michigan accredited alternative virtual high school for 15-21 years (grades 9-12). It is an extremely flexible program that works very well for our 19, 20, 21 year old students that are working full time or may have small children. The deadline for enrollment is the end of the day Monday, October 5th. We want to make sure that every young person in our community is given every opportunity to earn their high school diploma! If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out! Visit our website: www.soslearninglab.com go to partners and click on the DCI logo for more detailed information. Please feel free to share!

Winding up the school year with 24 students in our community earning their high school diploma!! Through our partnership with Diploma & Careers Institute we were able to provide virtual and in person support (pre Covid) for these amazing young people!!! We are so grateful for our community support that sends students to us so we can help them cross the finish line in spite of obstacles that can make it more challenging. We Spent the last couple of days delivering diplomas, snapped a few pictures & shed a few tears of pride and joy.! If you see one of these graduates give them a shout out because they 100% deserve it!!!!!
A gift idea from SOS Learning Lab, LLC! If you're starting your shopping this week please consider small local businesses. We need you and appreciate the support!
SOS Update email that went out last week :)
Dear Families & Community Partners,
SOS Learning Lab is hopeful that 2021 is off to a great healthy start for all of our families and community partners we serve! Here are a few updates that you need to know as we navigate our way through the rest of the year. All current decisions are subject to change based on the world around us.
SOS will continue to provide services using our virtual format until all of our staff is fully vaccinated. We are considered phase 1B, however it looks like we're last on the educator list. Please know that I am 100% okay with this because I think my fellow educators working within the brick & mortar school setting should be vaccinated first. We will continue to remain patient, because it is the right thing to do. Realistically we do not see in-person activities resuming until possibly this summer. We are always hoping for sooner if/when circumstances allow.
Please know that SOS staff safety is my #1 priority when making any decisions. We are a very small company with only 7 team members. If one or two get sick, every client we serve will be negatively impacted. If we all get sick, it will shut us down. Also our facility is small and doesn’t provide the safest ventilation or social distancing opportunities. We discovered that in September and feel it’s in everyone’s best interest to avoid that until it is as safe as possible.
Please also know that we are fully aware and understand how difficult this is for some of our students in regards to their social-emotional well being and the negative mental health impact. We will continue to incorporate as many supports with human connection as possible until we are able to see students face-to-face. We miss them all very much.
On a good note, for many of our students the virtual format is working very well! SOS Team members have gotten pretty savvy in the technological arena. The team is always busy brainstorming new ideas and better ways to serve. For some of our students, this virtual face-to-face and parents eliminating drive time has proven to be a better fit for their child. The virtual tutoring program will continue even after we are able to open in-person programming.
Lastly, our entire team is feeling incredibly blessed to be able to continue to serve families and our community as we all weather this storm. Watching fellow small businesses crumble around us is heartbreaking. I know the passion and hard work it takes to build a company and can’t comprehend what it would feel like to lose it. So thank you all for continuing to support us! No jobs have been lost, only gained, and with a little leftover to be able to support area families in need.
Please do not hesitate to connect with me if you have any questions, thoughts, ideas, etc. Your continued feedback is essential and you are all appreciated more than I can express.
Debbie
