The Buffalo concussion treadmill test is a supervised🚶 walking test that’s designed to see if you’re prepared to handle AEROBIC activity 😅. If you experience symptoms during the test, we stop✋. But, because we monitor your heart ❤️ rate, we can prescribe aerobic exercise as part of your concussion rehab at a SUB-symptom threshold heart rate and progress your exercise from there based on your response.
By doing specifically prescribed walking, stationary biking, the elliptical, etc. we can promote blood flow (which is decreased following a concussion) and increase metabolism within the brain. Motherhood is not kind on the body and mind. 😴 Sleepless nights. Awkward breastfeeding postures. Constant holding and rocking. Hormones. 🍼 Breastmilk EVERYWHERE. Trying to figure out when you can eat. Oh, and how your neck, back, wrists, shoulder, hips, head, feet—really everything---ache! On top of trying to figure how to care for a 👶 tiny human, you are trying to figure out how your new body operates and moves. I remember taking a deep breath the morning after Skylar was born and turning to my husband saying, “I can’t feel anything. No resistance. I feel so floppy”. Or, trying to move around in bed or take a shower...lots of concentration! It is the weirdest sensation to not be able to perform a routine task or movement that you just did two days ago.⠀

I feel very fortunate to have a great understanding of my body, healing timelines, movement patterns, body mechanics, exercise progressions, appropriate and inappropriate pain responses, etc. ⠀

Based on my knowledge of my own body and the human body, here are the soft goals I made for myself for the first four weeks. ⠀
1) Edema Control⠀
2) Cough, 😆 laugh, and sneeze painfree⠀
3) Wash my feet in the shower 🚿⠀
4) Start abdominal awareness work⠀
5) Daily walks 🚶⠀
6) Gentle exercises to counteract breast feeding posture⠀

😷 When people feel sick, they know they need to go to the doctor and find out what's going on to get treated. If you are having pain or difficulty with🚶 movement, then, you should go see a Physical Therapist! If you can't do the things you used to be able or want to, then a movement-based diagnosis is what you need. See a Physical Therapist First!
Rest is important after a concussion, or even any other injury to the body. Then after, we gradually and progressively introduce 🤔 cognitive and 😅 physical activity...again, just like we would with other injuries (at least the physical re-introduction). This way we can enhance the person's recovery instead of taking away all activities so they have nothing to do 😟. How do we know where to start⁉️ Sub-symptom threshold activity - whether that's 2 hours of school 🎒 or going on a 15 min walk 🚶. Have symptoms during an activity like reading 📗 ⁉️No problem, take a break and come back or try something else. It happens, it's okay. Unsure of where to begin or are you confused about concussion recovery ⁉️

❗️Rest. BUT it’s okay to do activities as tolerated in the acute stage.If you sprained your ankle, you probably wouldn’t run the day after (hopefully!). So if you sustain a concussion, probably not wise to wrestle your sibling. ❗️Sleep. The brain does a good job recovering as you sleep. Make sure you feel warm on these cold days to be comfortable. See if you can avoid blue screens (1 hr) or caffeine (6 hours) before bed to help you get into sleep mode 😴. ❗️Eat right. What does that even mean? Everyone has their own plan, but what’s likely best is to temporarily avoid excessive sugary snacks or beverages, alcohol, or other foods that you may have intolerances to (i.e. gluten, dairy). ❗️Follow protocols. Make sure you follow the steps of returning to learn/work and if you’re an athlete, return to play. This will help you gain the confidence to get back to what you want to do.

❄️ Winter can lead to hibernation and decreased activity which is especially problematic for the aging population. This can result in increase fall risk, de-conditioning, and loss of quality of life. ➡️ Physical Therapy is a great option to maintain activity so you can keep your independence and do what you love come Spring 🌻
Oldie but a goodie. Still my favorite warm-up series. Plank ➡️ plank to pike ➡️ alt single arm plank to pike ➡️ side plank rotation ➡️ table top rotation. This sequence helps open up the shoulders in all three planes while also teaching how to maintain an active neutral trunk and pelvis. Great for the lower body too! Try 10 reps of each!

We often hear about return to play protocols post-concussion. ❓Did you know there are return to learn (or work) protocols too? This time of year we see an ⬆️ in general population concussions due to ❄️conditions. Slips, falls, car accidents can all result in a concussion. 🤕 Even if you are feeling “alright”, please come in for an evaluation. You would be surprised how a minor “bonk” can affect mental clarity and cognitive function. 💻 Especially important with all the remote learning going on!
And just like that, another 4 weeks has flown by. Breast milk mess is more contained. You begin to adjust to a constantly varied sleeping pattern. And, activities that used to be easy are still surprisingly hard. I coach a Zoom Class called Longevity. It is geared towards the senior population. I couldn’t demonstrate the exercises I was asking them to do (granted, they are beast, and do challenging movements). ...

The truth is…the experience of watching your body shift, grow, and stretch can be difficult to allow.
To convince yourself to quiet the grips of control.
Perhaps particularly difficult for those of us with histories of eating disorders, disordered eating, or body image struggles.
And, especially, for those with marginalized identities, which move people further away from the so-called “body ideals” dictated by the harm of white supremacy.
Including racialized people, trans folks, those in larger bodies, people with disabilities, and more.
And, for those who have experienced loss and the reminders of their body are too close. ❤️
