Today's theme is the Quadratus Lumborum (QL). It has both vertical and diagonal fibers, making it capable of extension, side bending and rotation. It attaches to the 12th rib (involved in exhalation), iliac crest, and the transverse processes of L1-4. Yesterday a client came into clinic bent over to the left. This was from sitting too much at a work station with 2 monitors, and she was looking more to the left one. Using the NKT testing protocol I found her left QL overworking and her right QL under active. Released the left and activated the right. She could now stand up straight. She'll have to do her homework and change her work station. No amount of good work can overcome bad habits.

Suffering from sciatica? Although injury to lumbar discs could be the source, another potent source of "pseudo-sciatica" could be trigger points in the gluteus minimus muscle, located deep in the hip. Pain running down the back or side of the leg, extending past the knee, is typical of gluteus minimus trigger points. Pain in the lateral leg is typical of TrPs in the anterior portion of the muscle whereas posterior leg pain is often caused by dysfunction in the posteror fibers of the gluteus minimus. Patients might be able to avoid an expensive series of tests, steroid injections and even surgery by pursuing conservative treatment that includes releasing trigger points in this small, but important muscle.
