“Being on the ‘front lines’ for the first time, I am humbled to serve next to some of the most selfless nurses, doctors, medics and allied health providers who left their families and communities to respond to this emergency,” said Army Reserve Maj. Kym Su Whitaker.
“My role was advocate for patients and their families to keep them actively involved in making, sometimes difficult, medical care decisions throughout their hospitalization,” she explained. "Additionally, I helped with medications for symptoms, such as pain or distress that may be experienced during a prolonged hospital illness.”

Dorothe Bailey has a background in hotel and restaurant management. She didn’t discover her true passion until taking accounting classes at South University in Savannah, Ga., where she was living with her husband while he was in the military.

This PA (Physician Assistant) Week is especially significant as it falls during a global pandemic. PAs have stepped up in major ways, including serving on the frontlines of the COVID-19 response.
PAs have an opportunity to amplify public health messages from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to increase our nation’s immunization rates and reduce vaccine-preventable disease. We caught up with one of our recent grads from South University Columbia Campus, Amanda Wessel who graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Medical Assisting in September! 🎓
Amanda was previously an Ortho Tech and assisted with same day surgery patients with physical and occupational therapy. Colleagues said she was wasting her time and her ideal role would be something clinical and they recommended South University. She maintained her full-time job while attending South and was hired on the first day of her Providence externship! We are so proud of Amanda and ALL of our recent grads! 💙 🧡

Nationwide there is a shortage of anesthesia providers. There are only 12 educational programs across the U.S. preparing specialty anesthesiologist assistants. Forward thinking #SouthUniversity offers a Master’s program at the Savannah, Georgia campus and is set to offer the 13th anesthesiologist assistant program in West Palm Beach this year in the fourth quarter.

Edriana was born in rural Albania, and has lived in St. Petersburg, Florida for most of her life. She has a background in ophthalmology and is the class president of the first cohort of our Physician Assistant program. Edriana told us, "With guidance from the incredible faculty, the first class at South University will set the foundation for excellent education in our community.
