Southern California Integrative Wellness Center is one of the premier integrative health centers in Los Angeles. GRUNTING BABY: NORMAL OR NOT? This is a one-month-old grunting. Two normal reasons for grunting and one abnormal explained. 1. Thev have a colorectal reflex where thy push against the closed sphincter and they sometimes get red. They push really hard. They look uncomfortable but this is a normal occurrence and lasts approximately one month. 2. They grunt before they coo and that is normal. 3. An abnormal reason for grunting has to do with respiratory distress when they are sick and that may be a sign of actual trouble breathing. Here is one of my patients with physiological jaundice where the levels are high enough so that we had to treat and my patients are lucky enough that they can do it at home rather than the hospital. Jaundice occurs when there is a build-up of a naturally occurring substance in the blood called bilirubin. Jaundice is a common, temporary and usually harmless WHEN THE LEVELS ARE SAFE AND MONITORED. It affects both full-term and premature babies, usually appearing during the first week of the baby's life. The biliblanket is used on babies to help bring your baby’s blood levels back to normal. A fiberoptic pad is placed directly against your baby to bathe the skin in light. Absorption of this light leads to the elimination of bilirubin. The biliblanket can be used 24 hours a day to provide continuous treatment if prescribed by your doctor Love Dr. Ed. More info on types of Jaundice in Newborns: Physiological jaundice: This is the most common cause of newborn jaundice and occurs in more than 50% of babies. Because the baby has an immature liver, bilirubin is processed slower. The jaundice first appears at 2 to 3 days of age. Breast-feeding jaundice: Breast-feeding jaundice may occur when your baby does not drink enough breast milk. It occurs in 5% to 10% of newborns. The jaundice indicates a need for help with breast-feeding. Breast-milk jaundice: Breast-milk jaundice occurs in 1% to 2% of breast-fed babies. It is caused by a special substance that some mothers produce in their milk. This type of jaundice starts at 4 to 7 days of age. Blood group incompatibility (Rh or ABO problems): If a baby and mother have different blood types, sometimes the mother produces antibodies that destroy the newborn's red blood cells. This causes a sudden buildup of bilirubin in the baby's blood. This serious type of jaundice usually begins during the first 24 hours of life. High levels of bilirubin can occur in the blood called hyperbilirubinemia. These high levels can be dangerous to a baby. Thursday thoughts! Here are two of my patients. And what you can’t see in the picture is that these kids could not wait to get their organic lollipop from Dr. Ed. We specifically put a rule in my practice that whenever you have a vice you need a rule. Especially for young kids! So, the parents don’t give anything like that at home but when the kids have an appointment, they get this low sugar, organic lollipop, hence they neuro associate my practice with this tremendous amount of anticipation of love.
