⚽️ PLAY CAN BE EXERCISE...it just needs to be the "right type of play".⚽️ ➡️ Parents can assist with this by putting those electronic devices away and herding the kids outdoors for some good old fashion play! When we are out having fun…it doesn’t seem like work at all. But, boy oh boy, such great benefits to our health! ➡️ American College of Sports Medicine recommendations for children and adolescents include: ⚽️ 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity AEROBIC EXERCISE daily with vigorous intensity 3 days/week (e.g., running, bicycling, dancing, brisk hiking, jumping rope) ⚽️ This includes MUSCLE-STRENGTHENING exercise 3x/week (e.g., playing on playground equipment, climbing trees, tug-of war, rock climbing, lifting weights) ⚽️ And BONE-STRENTHENING exercise 3x/week (e.g., running, basketball, hopscotch, resistance training) as part of their exercise 😊Perhaps this weekend will be a perfect opportunity for an outdoor adventure with the family. Enjoy!

"Athletes who sleep on average less than 8 hours per night have 1.7 times times greater risk of being injured than those who sleep greater than or equal to 8 hours." Even though this study was applied to athletes, the importance of sleep cannot be ignored in injury prevention as well as recovery for the general population. Sleep allows your body to recover physically and mentally from the day. Without sleep your cortisol levels stay high which leads to increased inflammation. This increase in inflammation can make you more susceptible to injury and increase recovery time from that injury. https://www.instagram.com/p/CJNzsllgxDK/?igshid=1rdpbe1gn2eb1

How can we improve muscular strength when: * limited by pain *prolonged immobilization *a post surgical protocol *or just general muscle atrophy? 👉 Blood Flow Restriction Training (BFR)! 📌 BFR training can be a great tool for the PT setting to promote strength building in a low load environment. 📌 Evidence supports that low load exercises with BFR can have similar effects as heavy resistance training.

Snowshoeing is one of the great outdoor fitness activities we can enjoy during this snowy winter…..and your pup will love it too! The American College of Sports Medicine recommends some safety tips when exercising in the cold weather: ⛄️ Cover your head, face, legs, feet, and hands. These areas are at greater risk for injury from the cold. ⛄️ The risk for cold injury is higher when the conditions are wet (e.g., snow or rain). ⛄️ Wear appropriate footwear to prevent slipping. ⛄️ Adjust clothing and layers to help maintain warmth but prevent too much sweating. ⛄️ Be aware of the wind speed. For example, if the air temperature is 30 °F (-1.1 °C) and the wind speed is 10 mph, then the actual temperature will be 21 °F (-6.1 °C). ⛄️ Avoid exercise if possible when temperature falls below -8 °F (-27 °C). Tissue injury can occur in 30 minutes or less under these conditions. https://www.acsm.org/docs/default-source/files-for-resource-library/exercising-hot-cold-environments.pdf?sfvrsn=1b06c972_4

Lack of physical activity is a known risk factor for osteoporosis, which can put you at risk for painful fractures later in life. A recent study published in JAMA Network Open suggests that how active you are in adolescence can make all the difference in reducing your risk! According to the findings: 👍 More time spent in moderate-to vigorous-intensity physical activity in adolescence was associated with greater hip bone strength and mineral density at age 25 years 👍 The authors noted that intensity of the activity was important and that “bursts” of high-impact activity - such as jumping rope, jogging or playing tennis-were beneficial in helping to stimulate the bone building osteoblasts. #physicaltherapy #pt #Osteoporosis #bonehealth https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2769317
