Shawn, or “peepaw” as he is affectionately known to most, has been a part of the SSC team for almost 5 years. There is nobody that embodies the “I AM SSC” spirit with his whole heart as much as Shawn. Anyone who has the privilege to work with Shawn knows that he always works hard and always has a positive attitude – and almost everyone in the company has the chance to work with him since he is willing and able to do whatever is asked of him.
Shawn never hesitates to let company leadership know if he sees something that could be improved to help us meet our goal of excellence. He has worked consistently to grow his skills and role in the company – from a vacuum crew member to hand tunneling to core truck operator and recently he has become a vacuum truck driver!
We are all so thankful to have peepaw on our team and thank him for all that he does everyday!

September 8 was an exciting day for SSC as the 932’ tunnel at Cave Buttes Dam Auxiliary Outlet Channel Modifications project daylighted! 5 months to the day from the TBM launching the tunnel was completed. This was a huge milestone on a project we have been working to get to this point for over 3 years.
Our work continues now with grouting and welding and our JV partner will begin constructing the intake and outlet structures.
Congratulations to Arvid and everyone on the team who was a part of making this project a success!

Check out these photos from foundation excavations! This excavation was for light poles in an area with many underground utility conflicts. We used a vacuum excavator to dig these holes for precise excavation in close proximity to existing utilities without causing damage, which wouldn't be possible with any type of mechanical excavation!

Vacuum excavation utilizes the kinetic energy of a high velocity air stream to penetrate, expand and break-up soil. Loose soil and rocks are then removed from the hole through the use of a very powerful vacuum. For this job, we excavated a trench around a natural gas pipeline to allow the gas company to recoat the exterior, extending the life of the line and enhancing its safety.

SSC Underground is excited to be launching Hydro Excavation as a new service on February 1st! Hydro Excavation is a precise, non-destructive process that uses pressurized water and an industrial strength vacuum to excavate and evacuate soil.

We are less than a week away from launching our new Hydro Excavation service! As Vacuum Division Manager at SSC Underground, Curtis Zwar will be leading this new service. He is looking forward to having a complete excavation outfit that will allow SSC to maintain all work in-house.
Curtis has been with SSC for the past 11 years and has a previous background with several civil engineering firms designing for water, sewer and electric. He now manages the vacuum division and sees projects out from start to completion.

We were pleased to work with Felix Construction Company to help the City of Phoenix expand their force main at 7th St and AZ canal.
During the annual dry up of the canal, Felix excavated 110' across the canal and SSC supplied and welded a 24" x .500 steel casing and helped Felix install a 12" HDPE redundant force main pipe to aid the existing lift station on the north side of the canal.

Always seeing the best in humanity, Kathy believes the construction industry does a great job of embracing women, but will speak out when inaccurate beliefs about women in the industry are held.
Her advice to anyone looking to enter the industry is, "Don’t be afraid whatever your skillset, maybe there is opportunity and an environment that will amaze."

SSC's Office Administrator, Kathy McKinnon, first began working in construction in 1994 when she started working for a home builder in Reno, NV. Always seeing the best in humanity, Kathy believes the construction industry does a great job of embracing women, but will speak out when inaccurate beliefs about women in the industry are held.
Her advice to anyone looking to enter the industry is, "Don’t be afraid whatever your skillset, maybe there is opportunity and an environment that will amaze."
