An ostomy creates a change in the way waste exits the body as a result of a surgical procedure. This procedure either removes diseased portions of the bowel or allows the diseased portions to heal. A stoma is the opening created in the abdominal wall for the diversion of waste into an attached external pouch. An ostomy can be temporary or permanent.
In inflammatory bowel disease, some patients may undergo life saving surgery and have an ileostomy (made from the ileum) or colostomy (made from the colon.
However, with the introduction of biologics, such as Remicade, Entyvio, etc. in the management of IBD, the need for any type of surgery for patients with Crohns’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis is down to 30%.

How infusions pumps looked back in the 1970s.
The infusion pump, now a staple in hospitals and infusion centers, are a relatively new technology.
Portable infusion pumps were created by Dean Kamen in the 1970s. Similar devices had previously existed, but these devices were fixed, large and of little use, usually restricted to only a few operating rooms.
The last decade in particular has seen tremendous innovation in “smart” pumps that are now able prevent inadvertent IV medication errors and detect air in the line.
Infusion pumps are a relatively new invention that have come a long way in a short amount time.
