Sportrock is excited to be hosting a USA Climbing Youth Bouldering Qualifying Event that will take place in the Sportrock Performance Institute (SRPI), the new bay at our Alexandria location. The competition will run over two weeks from November 2nd to November 15th. Competitors will need to sign up for SRPI timeslots if they wish to compete. Hours and links to sign up can be found at the link in our bio. Timeslots will become available to book five days from their scheduled time. If you sign-up and decide not to come, we ask that you please call to cancel your reservation as capacity is limited. This is very important. Competitors will need to have completed the Sportrock Participant Agreement as well as the Supplemental Participant Agreement and have washed their hands at the outdoor wash station prior to entry. They will also need to have a USA Climbing membership and have paid the competition fee on the KAYA Climbing app to participate. Masks are required to be worn at all times in the facility. We are stoked to share the SRPI with all the outside competitors and to further develop the space as a regional hub for competitive climbing! Headlamp climbing is a member event we have every year. In a normal year we have 100-200 people come through the doors at our Alexandria location to take part in a lights out celebration. This is hands down one of my favorite boulders in the south. I think I love it because it forces beta, but allows for some minor variation. The density of this diabase boulder patch means there is something for everyone from v0-vHard. The boulders are on private land so every year @scpclimbers makes careful arrangements with land owners to allow access. On April 17th & 18th Sportrock will be hosting a Youth Training Camp! Join Enrico Baistrocchi (@solostileclimbinglab), a former IFSC World Cup Competitor, and IFSC International Routesetter, and Sportrock’s Jeremy Hardin, Level Five USAC Chief National Routesetter, along with internationally recognized coach Taylor Reed (@thebetaangel) for a one or two-day training camp focused on competition climbing. Athletes will get to climb on competition-style boulders with guidance from world-class routesetters and coach. The routesetters will tailor the climbs to the athletes as they climb, in a process called supportive setting! Sportrock Climbing League Competition #2 is in the books! Two weeks ago competitors of all skills and abilities got together to put on an absolute show, and had a blast doing it! team “Chalk & Awe” just eeked out team “Sterling Crew” for first in the overall standings, with one more competition at the end of this month to decide it all! So far the Sportrock Climbing League has been everything we could have hoped for! It has been amazing to see all the competitors interact with the SRPI, coordinating practices and getting guidance from coaches and routesetters. All the competitors have really committed to their teams, and it is rad how excited everyone has been to grow as climbers! A special shout out to Chris Byrom and Xander Wong for taking first place in their respective categories. And another one to the routesetting team @theroutesetter @boulderva & @alexbrowndawg for turning out some really engaging blocs. This is just the start folks!

The following day, May 15th, we deliver the same experience with Tom Cecil (American Alpine Club - Seneca Rocks Chapter Eduction Chair and owner of Seneca Rocks Mountain Guides) and Hans Florine at Seneca Rocks, WV. They will be sharing all the mistakes and lessons they’ve learned on single and multi-pitch climbing. Sharing self-rescue lessons = sufficiency, and how-to-fit-more-climbing-in = efficiency. Iv been feeling a bit home sick and miss my home away from home aka @sportrock. While browsing their Instagram feed I came across this photo by @really_notjeff so I decided to do a speed drawing of it! Iv gotta say that this was def an extreme lesson in simplifying. Overall I'm pretty satisfied with the final results ☺️ I managed to record a bulk of me sketching and drawing this one, but sadly my iPad died out around the texturing process so I finished texturing on my laptop and forgot to screen record.
