Health care workers, first responders thank veteran who has cheered them on since March
Today, St. Anthony North Health Campus, along with first responders, the Flight for Life team and Westminster Mayor Herb Atchison honored Joseph Duran, a retired, Vietnam War veteran who stood outside waving a flag to support our hospital for over six months. His daily support helped inspire our team and keep us going though this pandemic. Today marks his last day outside our hospital, but he'll continue to support community heroes by moving on to police and fire departments next. He is an American hero and we are forever grateful for his unwavering support.
Congratulations Dr. Ian Weber and Dr. Jeremy Kinder, two orthopedic surgeons at St. Anthony North Health Campus, on their 50th ROSA Robotic knee operation. Great accomplishment.
The compounds in wildfire smoke put stress on our bodies and can release potentially dangerous molecules into our bloodstreams. Reduce the risks to your health by avoiding outside activity when visibility is less than 5 miles. To check the current Air Quality Index near your home, visit airnow.gov. Longmont United Hospital on health: Wildfire smoke can impact your health
The plethora of symptoms from exposure to wildfire smoke includes coughing, eye irritation, sinus irritation, chest pain, headaches, wheezing, asthma attacks and rapid heartbeat. These symptoms can be experienced by both adults and children – and in fact, your kids can be more sensitive to wildfire smoke because of their still-developing lungs. Dr. Judd Dawson, aCentura Health primary care provider in Longmont, recommends limiting your exposure to the outdoors and checking the quality of your home air filtration system if you’re feeling the effects of the smoke.
Getting outside is important for our mental and emotional well-being as well as our physical health. But what should you do when wildfire smoke is heavy in the air? Dr. Judd Dawson, a Centura Health primary care provider in Longmont, recommends making informed decisions based on your local Air Quality Index or using the Environmental Protection Agency’s visibility guide. If visibility is limited to five to 10 miles, people sensitive to the smoke should consider reducing or avoiding outside activity. When visibility is less than 5 miles, we all should avoid outdoor physical activity. Learn more at https://bit.ly/32fI62s.

Important words from Dr. Andrew French: "While early confusion was fueled by initial messaging that face coverings don’t minimize exposure to the virus, the science is abundantly clear - masks do guard against community spread. In other words, by wearing masks, we protect others. And since asymptomatic infection with COVID-19 happens frequently, universal mask-wearing is an essential tool in our protection arsenal while we wait on a vaccine."

The arrival of the first vaccine for COVID-19 is a momentous occasion, but it will take many months for supply to catch up with demand. In the meantime, COVID-19 remains a dangerous and deadly virus. As a community, we must continue to wear masks, socially distance, wash our hands frequently, and stay home when not feeling well. #MaskUp

Dr. Andrew French was one of the first Centura Health caregivers to receive the COVID-19 vaccine last week. Here's an update on how he's feeling as well as some notes about the differences between the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines being administered to our caregivers across Colorado and western Kansas.
We share your excitement about the expanding number of Coloradans eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccination, including the essential workers and residents 70 and older identified in the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s updated Phase 1B. Please know we are working hard with our state and local public health partners to safely and quickly distribute the vaccine. When we have a vaccine available for you, Centura Health will contact you through your MyCenturaHealth account with specific instructions on how to make an appointment. If you don’t have a MyCenturaHealth account, we will provide instructions on how to create one once you are eligible for the vaccine. We are not currently able to provide walk-in vaccinations.

Unlike the typical flu vaccine, the COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna require two doses for maximum effectiveness. Learn more at https://www.centura.org/covid-19/covid-19-vaccine-information.
We understand your eagerness to receive a COVID-19 vaccination. We're similarly eager to provide that vaccination to you. Centura Health remains committed to quickly and safely administering COVID-19 vaccinations in accordance with the state of Colorado’s tiered distribution plan. We know that the sooner Coloradans are vaccinated, the sooner this devastating pandemic can come to an end. We will send you an invitation to receive the vaccine based on your age, health risk factors and the tiering system established by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. No walk-in vaccination clinics are planned for the initial phases of vaccine distribution. For more information about the vaccine, visit https://www.centura.org/covid-19/covid-19-vaccine-information.

School nurses receive COVID-19 vaccine as distribution widens
More than 13,000 Centura Health associates have now received their first COVID-19 vaccinations, and we recently invited more than 9,000 community partners to receive the vaccine in our hospitals, with many more to come in the weeks ahead. Here, OB nurse Robin Johnson receives her first shot at Parker Adventist Hospital. "I'm proud to say I received the Pfizer vaccine the first day it was offered," Robin says. With each dose of vaccine administered, we move closer to an end to this devastating pandemic.
While initial studies indicate the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are approximately 95% effective at preventing recipients from getting sick with COVID-19, it is not yet clear whether those who have been vaccinated can still be asymptomatic spreaders of the virus. For this reason, we strongly recommend everyone – including people who have received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine – continue to practice safe behaviors such as wearing a face mask, practicing social distancing, washing your hands frequently, and staying home when sick.

Please note that a scheduled appointment is required to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. We are unable to accommodate walk-ins at this time.

"Here's to Dad," Centura Health anesthesiologist Dr. Gregory Fauteux said this week as he received his second dose of COVID-19 vaccine.
Dr. Fauteux knows the devastation COVID-19 can cause; the virus took his father's life November 22. "One of the true tragedies is that there are over 350,000 people just like him - someone's father, someone's brother, someone's mother, someone's daughter, and we just need to take it seriously."
We're working day and night to get the vaccine to as many of you as possible and as quickly as possible in accordance with state guidelines for vaccine distribution. While this process plays out, it's essential that all of us continue to do the things we know stop the spread of this deadly virus: wear a face mask, social distance, practice good hand hygiene, and stay home when sick.

In Latinx communities, promotoras are community members who receive specialized training to provide health education to their fellow residents.
The first promotoras vaccination clinic, held this past week at St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood, is just part of our ongoing effort to address longstanding inequities in vaccination rates in communities of color.

We're myth-busting with Dr. Stephen Cobb this morning. If you've heard either of these two myths about the COVID-19 vaccine, please spend less than 60 seconds today listening to Dr. Cobb provide the facts:
1. The COVID-19 vaccine contains live virus
2. The COVID-19 vaccine changes our DNA
For more factual information about the vaccine, please visit https://www.centura.org/covid-19/covid-19-vaccine-information.
One of the most common concerns we hear from community members about the COVID-19 vaccine is that it might not be safe. Dr. Stephen Cobb and Dr. Ozzie Grenardo talk about the successful trials of both the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines and why those trials give health care professionals overwhelming confidence in both the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine.
Learn more at https://www.centura.org/covid-19/covid-19-vaccine-information.
We're as excited to provide COVID-19 vaccinations as you are to receive them. To date, we've launched more than 35 clinics across Colorado to provide vaccinations to residents 70 and older.
If you're a Centura Health patient, you will receive an invitation through your MyCenturaHealth patient portal account when a dose is available for you. If you're not a Centura patient or don't have a MyCenturaHealth account, visit https://www.centura.org/covid-19/covid-19-vaccine-information to sign up to receive the vaccine. We're committed to ensuring vaccine access to everyone based on the state's phased prioritization.
Dr. Ramona Rodriguez practices internal medicine at Centura Health's Timberview Clinic at Parker. She's passionate about promoting the COVID-19 vaccine in our communities.
"I received my vaccine for myself, for my husband (so he stays well), for my patients (so I can continue to be healthy to care for them), for my family (hoping we can see each other soon), for my community (because I want to reassure them and encourage them to continue to practice prevention), and in memory of those we have lost to COVID-19."
Learn more about the vaccine, including how to sign up to receive updates about the vaccine and its availability, at https://www.centura.org/covid-19/covid-19-vaccine-information.
Our caregivers talk about why they're choosing to get the COVID-19 vaccine, and why they recommend you do as well.

Unsung heroes share stories from front lines of COVID-19 pandemic
Getting a COVID-19 vaccine doesn't mean we can immediately return to pre-pandemic behaviors. In fact, it remains critical that we all continue to follow safety protocols such as mask-wearing, hand-washing and social distancing. Our Dr. Andrew French explains why.

We are so proud of our team of incredible caregivers. This week we learned that Healthgrades recognized St. Anthony North Health Campus with its Critical Care Excellence Award for the third consecutive year and with its Outstanding Patient Experience Award. Both honors place us in the top 10% of U.S. hospitals. Healthgrades also named us a:
• Five-Star Recipient for Esophageal/Stomach Surgeries
• Five-Star Recipient for Treatment of Pancreatitis for the second consecutive year
• Five-Star Recipient for Treatment of Sepsis for the eighth consecutive year
• Five-Star Recipient for Treatment of Respiratory Failure for the seventh consecutive year
• Five-Star Recipient for Vaginal Delivery
We're committed to providing COVID-19 vaccinations equitably across our communities while following the state's phased prioritization. For the latest information about the vaccine and its distribution, visit us at https://www.centura.org/covid-19/covid-19-vaccine-information.
Our bodies don't develop instant immunity after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine - particularly after the first dose. That means we remain susceptible to contracting and spreading the virus, even up to two weeks after receiving the second dose.
We realize it can be confusing to keep up with all the latest vaccine news. But we're here to help. Visit our Vaccine Information page at https://www.centura.org/covid-19/covid-19-vaccine-information for clarity and answers.
Today is National Wear Red Day, part of a coast-to-coast effort to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease and to save lives. Here are some great reasons to GO RED today:
G: Get Your Numbers. Ask your doctor to check your blood pressure and cholesterol.
O: Own Your Lifestyle. Stop smoking, lose weight, exercise, and eat healthy. It's up to you. No one can do it for you.
R: Realize Your Risk. We think it won't happen to us, but heart disease kills one of every three women.
E: Educate Your Family. Make healthy food choices for you and your family. Teach your kids the importance of staying active.
D: Don't Be Silent. Tell every woman you know that heart disease is our No. 1 killer.

Johnny Cashmore needed a kidney transplant, and his wife Jessica was willing to donate one of hers. When she wasn't a match, they did the next best thing -- participated in a paired exchange in which Jessica donated her kidney to someone on the list for whom she was a match. This living donation chain is still going, with seven people having received kidneys from it.
Johnny's procedure was performed at Centura Transplant at Porter Adventist Hospital. Dr. Alex Wiseman, executive director of kidney transplant at Centura Transplant, says paired exchanges such as the one that benefitted the Cashmore family can significantly decrease the wait time for a needed transplant. "Anytime that you can see something that seems to be not a possibility, turn into a possibility, it just is truly rewarding," Dr. Wiseman says.

This Valentine's Day is a little sweeter knowing 2,000 educators across our communities received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine Saturday. With a special allotment of vaccine from the state, we held educator vaccination clinics at six Centura hospitals yesterday, including ours. We're administering more educator doses at clinics early this week as well.
We know vaccinating our teachers helps ensure the promise of an eventual return to normalcy, allowing educators to more quickly get back to the work they love -- providing face-to-face instruction for our young learners. ❤️
We recently received the prestigious Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI Accreditation from the American College of Cardiology. What does this mean to our community? It signifies the high-quality cardiac care that every one of our patients receives.
"I’m so proud of this accreditation because it speaks volumes about the amazing cardiac care SANHC gives,” said Alexandra Stebbins, our Cardiovascular RN Program Coordinator. “Every step of the patient’s journey – ER, cath lab, ICU, the floors, and cardiac rehab – has to give exemplary care in order for this accreditation to be granted.
“It also looks at the entire spectrum of cardiac care patients, from low-risk chest pain all the way to STEMI patients. Every single cardiac patient that comes through our doors is getting the best care.”
We are so proud of our team for this three-year accreditation!

Milestones are worth celebrating, even when the journey is still underway. This weekend we administered our 100,000th dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. It's a feat accomplished through collaboration, determination and a sense of purpose inherent in a mission-driven organization like ours. We know there are many more vaccinations to give in the weeks and months ahead, and we look forward to continuing this life-saving work in our communities. Thank you to each of our incredible caregivers for their dedication, and thank you to our neighbors and fellow community members for entrusting us with this important work.
Providing vaccinations to people across our communities is truly a team effort. From our incredible Centura Health caregivers to our many dedicated partner organizations to volunteer citizens simply wanting to lend a hand in this historic undertaking, we'd like to take a moment to express our sincere gratitude to everyone playing a part in the vaccination clinics happening here and around the world. We cherish our role - indeed our mission - of caring for those who are ill and nurturing the health of the people in our communities.

Did you know cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 cause of death worldwide, with more people dying each year from heart attacks and strokes than any other cause? Cardiac and vascular diseases can strike anyone -- men and women of all ages, races, and economic classes. Fortunately, there are steps we can all take to identify and reduce our risk.
A calcium score heart scan helps identify calcified plaque levels in your heart arteries. If your score is elevated, you can make appropriate lifestyle and medication changes. These changes may reduce your chance of suffering a heart attack or stroke, possibly averting a life-threatening event.
Because we know how important heart health is, we offer calcium score heart scans for $99. There is no preparation required, and no referral is needed. For more information and to schedule a calcium score heart scan at one of our facilities near you, visit www.centura.org/care-and-health/coronary-artery-calcium-screening.

"Dr. Blackwood serves as an inspiration to Black physicians throughout Colorado, and an endowment in his name to benefit scholarships for Black medical students is incredibly appropriate and long overdue." says Dr. Oswaldo Grenardo, Centura's Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer and a family medicine physician. One year ago today, the first confirmed COVID-19 patient in the state of Colorado was treated at Centura-St. Anthony Summit Medical Center in Frisco. As we reflect on the past year, we remember how our caregivers here and across our entire health system stepped up in the face of immense challenges to do what they do best - care for our patients and our communities. They extend compassion, hope and healing with every interaction, and they meet each day with courage, perseverance and kindness. While our COVID-19 response continues, we want to take a moment on this one-year anniversary to thank our caregivers for all they have done, and continue to do, for our healing ministry.

It takes an incredible amount of time, effort and collaboration with partners to run mass COVID-19 vaccination clinics like the ones we're setting up at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, the Colorado State Fair and the Broadmoor World Arena. These drive-up community clinics are part of Governor Jared Polis' Vaccines for All plan, and they are providing life-saving vaccinations to thousands of Coloradans each day the clinics operate. We're humbled and proud to be part of this effort. If you're eligible for the vaccine based on the state's current phased prioritization, go to www.centura.org/vaccine to sign up for an available slot at one of these upcoming clinics.

Nothing brings us greater joy than sending you home from the hospital to complete your recovery. But it's important to be prepared for your return home.
• Make certain you know what medications and/or treatments you will need once home.
• Ask what you should watch for that would require a call to your caregiver and which caregiver to call if questions come up.
• Also ask when you should schedule follow up appointments.

Our caregivers know to wash their hands before working with patients, but that shouldn't stop you from reminding them. You are part of your health care team! Let's get back to the things we love, together.
We're a proud partner of Governor Jared Polis and the state of Colorado's Vaccines for All plan, bringing drive-up vaccination clinics to our communities. Sign up for a spot at an upcoming clinic by visiting www.centura.org/vaccine and clicking on "Vaccine Event Scheduling."
As Patient Safety Awareness Week continues, so too does this familiar message: Scrub your hands! Wash your hands when entering and leaving the hospital, your patient room, the bathroom and any treatment rooms, and be sure to wash your hands if you handle any solid material. Good hand hygiene is one of the easiest and most effective ways to keep yourself healthy. #thumbsup2021 #psaw2021
Here's another tip in celebration of Patient Safety Awareness Week: Know your medications. Ask for the names of the medications you are receiving in the hospital and how they are expected to help. Caregivers should always check your identification band before giving a medication to make certain the correct medication is being given to the correct person. If you don’t see this, ask your caregivers to double check that the medication is meant for you. #thumbsup2021 #psaw2021
