In honor of #NICUAwarenessMonth, we want to introduce you to one of the incredible members of our team who has a special connection to St. Joseph’s nursery intensive care unit (NyICU). Meet EK Rubio! Over the last six years, he’s cared for some of the tiniest patient’s in St. Joseph’s NyICU. He was inspired to become a NyICU nurse after his own son was cared for in the very same unit.
Twelve years ago, EK and his wife Carrie, welcomed a baby boy at St. Joseph’s. Antonio was born at 26 weeks gestation and weighed just over two pounds. Antonio was rushed to the NyICU immediately after he was born, which marked an important turning point in EK’s life and career. “When you go through those two doors into the NyICU, it’s like a whole other world,” said EK. “I saw all of these nurses taking care of babies just like mine. This is what they specialize in, and it made me feel better.”
During Antonio’s three month stay in St. Joseph’s NyICU, EK and Carrie grew close to Antonio’s primary nurses and other members of the NyICU team. The care the St. Joseph’s team provided their son sparked a desire for EK to go back to school and become a nurse. With the support of his wife, that dream became a reality. Now, EK works with some of the same doctors and nurses who cared for Antonio, who is now a thriving 12 year old!

🧼🖐️🚿 We know. We know. You already know how to wash your hands, right?
But on this Global #HandwashingDay, we remind you that it takes more than simply soap and water. Experts say that we need to scrub our hands for at least 20 seconds (the amount of time it takes to hum your ABCs twice) to keep from getting sick.
Many of the steps you take to slow the spread of COVID-19 can also help protect you from other respiratory illnesses, like the flu! Help keep yourself and others healthy this flu season by getting your flu shot, and continuing to wear a mask, keep your hands clean and practice social distancing. #MaskUp #LatherUp #SleeveUp

IT’S OFFICIAL: We are excited to announce that Dignity Health and Yavapai Regional Medical Center (YRMC) have formed an affiliation.
Our organizations share a special piece of history dating back to a time before Arizona was even a state! In the 1890s, the Sisters of Mercy founded the first hospital in Phoenix - our own Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center - AND the very first hospital in Prescott! While the health care landscapes have drastically grown over time in both areas, the commitment to creating healthier communities has not wavered. This partnership will allow Dignity Health in Arizona and YRMC to further the Sisters’ mission of providing compassionate and expert health care to all Arizonans.

Halloween is almost here! 🎃 Don’t forget to dress up your costume with a cloth or medical mask! As a reminder – a costume mask doesn’t replace the need for a protective mask and both should not be worn at the same time. #HappyHalloween

This young COVID-19 survivor is back home with his two kids after spending 84 days on ECMO and more than 130 days in the hospital. Ryan Parker, 39, was first treated at Dignity Health Chandler Regional Medical Center before he was transferred to Dignity Health St. Joseph’s where he was ultimately put on ECMO – which is essentially an artificial lung to help support a patient while their lungs recover. Ryan credits both medical teams for helping him make a miraculous recovery.
New data is shining a light on the positive outcomes of COVID-19 patients who have received ECMO treatment at St. Joseph’s Norton Thoracic Institute. St. Joseph’s reporting shows that discharge rates of the hospital’s COVID-19 patients who have required ECMO treatment exceed the worldwide average. St. Joseph’s hospital discharge rates for these patients is reported at 71 percent compared to data from the Extracorporeal Live Support Organization which shows the worldwide average discharge rate of 51 percent.
