Thanks to everyone for so many donations! We couldn’t make stockings or deliver the gifts to Lifecare, or go caroling at Monaco this year. But we still took every tag off the angel tree (and got gifts) for Lifecare, the youth wrote a Christmas card to every resident at Lifecare , and we collected more items for St Vincent’s operation stocking stuffer than ever before.

Happy feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe - Patroness of the Americas! This is the only recognized apparition of Mary, over the centuries, in which she is pregnant. She comes to each of us as our mother, one who is full of hope for the future...of the new life that is promised by God. Her message is a strong and positive reminder toward the end of this pandemic. God is with us...Emmanuel.
In her fourth apparition, which took place on this day in 1531, Mary said to Juan Diego: “Hear me and understand well, my little son, that nothing should frighten or grieve you. Let not your heart be disturbed. . . . Am I not here, who is your Mother? Are you not under my protection? Am I not your health? Are you not happily within my fold? What else do you wish? Do not grieve nor be disturbed by anything.” May we also take her words to heart, trusting always in Mary’s maternal protection.

It may be surprising to learn that the majority of saints whose feasts fall within the octave of Christmas are martyrs, including today’s saint, St. Thomas Becket. From the moment we celebrate Christmas, the Church reminds us that being a Christian is not easy. In fact, it means laying down our lives for Christ. While most of us will not be called to shed our blood for our faith, we must still take up our crosses daily and embrace our sufferings in imitation of Jesus. Let us pray that we might do so joyfully, offering our lives in love for the One who embraced the manger and endured the Cross out of love for us.
