This study published in JAMA Ophthalmology came from a curious observation made by researchers in China. 😷 They noticed that very few of their sick patients wore glasses, which was remarkable since nearsightedness is common in China. 🇨🇳 They examined hospital records from patients with Covid-19 to learn more. Of 276 patients admitted to the hospital over a 47-day period, only 16 patients (5.8%) had myopia or nearsightedness that required them to wear glasses for more than eight hours a day. 🧐 Earlier research shows that more than 30% of people in the region needed glasses for nearsightedness.

This causes irritation and discomfort. When you have entropion, your eyelid may be turned in all the time or only when you blink hard or squeeze your eyes. It is more common in older adults and generally affects only the lower eyelid. 👵👨🦳

Here is a picture of a patient who came in complaining of foreign body sensation, tearing, and sensitivity to light. 👀 We found that he had Thygeson’s superficial punctate keratitis - an uncommon, chronic, and recurrent corneal problem. The disease is characterized by these small, elevated, “stuck on”-looking whitish opacities on the cornea. 👁 The course of this disease is variable, but in some patients this problem could persist off and on for YEARS. 👩⚕️👨⚕️Our patient is feeling much better on treatment and is now able to go back to work and be comfortably examined (and photographed) in clinic 👍
