What do you think of this tornado sculpture? This Art is located in downtown Moab, Utah. It was the first tornado sculpture that Dr. Steckelberg has encountered. May the only tornadoes we see be in the movie Twister. #art #tornado #lincolndentist #steckelbergdental

Gratitude... it is a great thing to practice daily. I am grateful for beautiful sunsets. When life gets challenging, stopping to express gratitude can really help.

It's Halloween Door Art time! We have done "Monster Doors" with construction paper, scissors, tape, and a little creativity. This year Dr Steckelberg's daughter created a Monster that had to cover the entire picture window (with flames and all!). Here's to finding a safe and fun way to celebrate life's little joys with your family this fall!
Something fun... it's time to Play Monopoly... We never get a game finished in a day around here. But we hope this inspires you to bring out a board or card game today. Happy National Play Monopoly Day!
Happy Thanksgiving from Steckelberg Dental! The office is closed to give the team a little break over this long holiday weekend. The office will be open again on Monday, November 30, 2020 at 8:30am. Current patients who experience a dental emergency or concern during our break should call the office and listen to the voicemail for directions. *We've been so busy lately that we didn't get a team photo this week. Pictured is Dr. Melanie Steckelberg recently at Pioneers Park. The Steckelberg Dental team wishes you joy and health during this holiday season and always. Take Care!
This holiday season find your joy in what makes YOU happy. This is my COVID Christmas tree at home. It is a pre-lit hand-me-down from my mother-in-law with no ornaments... and that is how it will stay. My family is happy with it and I hope that you find your individual joy this holiday season as well. Stay warm, stay well, continue to get preventative dental care.

Did you know? This 1930 painting by Grant Wood won a $300 prize and was exhibited for the first time at the Art Institute of Chicago. Mr. Wood used his sister and his dentist as models for a farmer and his daughter. The painting is called American Gothic and is very popular today at that same museum. Imagine this with your dentist as the model! I doubt it would win a $300 prize. LOL Photo by Dr. Steckelberg, March 4, 2019, Art Institute of Chicago Steckelberg Dental March 4, 2019 at 2:12 PM ·

Happy National Popcorn Day! What is your favorite way to eat popcorn? Dr. Steckelberg likes buttery popcorn with milk chocolate M&Ms sprinkled throughout. Yum! Guess what our advice is... yes, you've got it - don't forget to floss after enjoying.
It is a great day today... it's National "Plan for Vacation Day!" Where will you go? Even if it is just one day off, you can make it the best day ever. We hope that you enjoy "Day Dreaming" of a Vacation today!
Dr. Steckelberg makes an effort every day to express gratitude. Today, on National Spouses Day, she would like to say "Thank You" to her husband for all his help around the dental office and at home. We make a good team, Steve!
Make sure to give out a Compliment or two today! For National Compliment Day, Dr. Steckelberg would like to tell the world that most of the photos she shares are actually taken by her husband, Steve. Here is the famous photographer (at least he is famous to Dr. Steckelberg and her family) at the Nakalele Blowhole in 2018.
Children seem to have anxiety about more than just going to the dentist, but we can lessen their dental anxiety. http://vlnkx.com/9H7lP_9
This year's theme for National Children's Dental Health Month is: "Water, Nature's Drink" We found this tag on our Gratitude Tree the other day and are also thankful for clean water to drink! Water is the best drink choice for your teeth, friends.
We are doing our part to protect our patients and loved ones. We got the shot 💉 , take that COVID! 🦠 🥊
It's National Children's Dental Health Month for all of February. Dr. Steckelberg (pictured) LOVES to see children. While she hardly ever wears bunny ears, she almost always is wearing a smile. Check back with us all month long for posts about Children's Dental Health.
When Should Your Child Visit a Dentist for the First Time? February is #nationalchildrensdentalhealthmonth http://lnk4u.us/IwiHk3b
A grain of rice is all the bigger your "smear" of toothpaste should be... until you are (3) THREE. Then the little princesses (and princes) only need a PEA-sized amount of toothpaste. We recommend that an adult dispenses the toothpaste. #nationalchildrensdentalhealthmonth
Kids need to floss, too! If the teeth touch, then floss needs to go in between them, every day. My recommendation is to let your child choose their own kids' flossers in the store or online. For younger children, make sure to only give one or two options (that you have already decided would fit in your budget) and let your child choose between those. And... Happy Flossing!
One way to help your child feel comfortable at our office, is to “play dentist” at home. http://bit.ly/2oFS5Kz
A simple message from a kindergartner, "Come on in, there's nothing to fear." When talking to children about the dentist, make sure to use positive role modeling. Talk about how Dr. Steckelberg will count their teeth and clean them. Please don't even say the words "hurt" or "shot." When we say, "It won't hurt" a child will now think, "it could hurt." So we recommend talking about how "your teeth will be sparkly clean after your visit" instead. If you have questions, please reach out to us. We want your child to have the best experience possible.
This still stands true... if you are going to eat a sweet, eat it with your meal to reduce your cavity risk.
When should you start brushing your child's teeth? When you first see them! Look at this little "monkey's" first two teeth (and that drool!)
Happy Valentine's Day! When choosing treats for your little sweeties, Dr. Steckelberg recommends treats that are not sticky nor of a gummy consistency. Plain chocolate candies are often the best option next to fresh fruits. Just remember to brush your child's teeth after they enjoy their treat. #nationalchildrensdentalhealthmonth #steckelbergdental
Did you know that we can now treat dental decay (cavities) in our youngest patients without the dental drill? When a child is not ready for traditional dentistry, Dr. Steckelberg can apply Silver Diamine Fluoride and stop that cavity right in its' tracks! Preventative dental care has improved since Dr. Steckelberg was a young child - thank goodness! #nationalchildrensdentalhealthmonth #steckelbergdental
Yes, there's gonna be too many very cold days here for awhile, so let's all "think warm thoughts" together. I am bundling up in my warmest clothes and dreaming about the 85 degree high today in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. Cover up your mouth and nose when you go outside today. Even healthy teeth can give out a little "eek" when that cold air hits them! Stay warm, my friends! #steckelbergdental #warmthoughts☀️

We might be a little late... but could not let more time go by without recognizing an awesome team member. Congratulations to Deb on your 3 year work anniversary at Steckelberg Dental! Did you know that giving baby a bottle after age one "significantly increases" their risk of tooth decay? The AAP recommends starting bottle weaning at 9 months of age and have the bottle feeding ceased by one year old. It is usually more difficult to take away the bottle after 15 months of age. Dr. Steckelberg recommends introducing open-faced cups starting when your child is 6 months old. Pro tip: give it a try first outside (in warmer weather) or right before bathtime, as there are often spills!. #nationalchildrensdentalhealthmonth #steckelbergdental http://lnk4u.us/8rqPqkZ
Today's high temperature is expected to be 26. Woohoo! Thank goodness, because Monday's -4 high was beyond bitter. It has been a cold #NationalChildrensDentalHealth month, but we've got this! Let's work together to teach this youngest generation good dental hygiene. Brush your teeth for 2 minutes 2 times a day! #2min2x https://nationaltoday.com/national-childrens-dental-health-month/?fbclid=IwAR3g7fALzSJpAg3IeEufVs3OJZed4FFSZBnauzTTv96kpVUi29AW85btk8Q
Which toothbrush head needs changed? You should change your toothbrush (head) every 3 months, or when the bristles start to fray. Answer: the two on the left need changed! Is it time to change your toothbrush? #NationalChildrensDentalHealthMonth
The family that brushes their teeth together, brushes better. At least we think it can help. One person can take turns timing the brushing. You can give the little ones pointers. Read our blog for Your Guide to Preventative Dental Care https://vlnkx.co/2HPlP3C
We treat patients of all ages, from infancy to elderly. Please let us know if you are expecting a child or planning to get pregnant, so that we can visit about preventative dental care during pregnancy and what to expect for your child's first dental visit. Dr. Steckelberg understands the challenges of pregnancy and oral health first-hand. #nationalchildrensdentalhealthmonth
We love to read books, especially when teeth are involved. Have you read Silverlicious? It involves several characters that are perfect to read about on "National Tell A Fairy Tale Day. You might just like it! #TellAFairyTaleDay
There are some anatomic obstacles, like large tonsils and/or adenoids, that can present challenges for healthy nasal breathing. Large tonsils like this might make it difficult to breathe through your nose and could make that proper tooth/lip resting position seem impossible. Tonsils do not need removed just because of their size, but if you always hear your child snoring loudly and their tonsils look like this, please have a discussion with Dr. Steckelberg and your primary doctor. Many variables go into proper evaluation of airway health.
Ideally, your teeth should not be touching except when you are eating. Most of us often smile for a photo with our teeth biting together, just like Dr. Steckelberg did here when setting up their football tailgating party. But when we are resting, we should have a little space between our top teeth and our bottom teeth. There is a theory out there that we could reduce nighttime grinding/clenching by making sure that our teeth are slightly separated during the daytime. It takes effort, but is something that doesn't cost anything to try. Lips together, teeth slightly apart, and breathe through your nose. Happy Wednesday!
Where should your tongue go when you are resting? Has this thought ever crossed your mind? Well, for best airway health, your tongue should rest on the roof of your mouth, slightly behind your top front teeth. This resting position is quite the change for many people, but is instrumental in developing a healthy long-term nasal breathing habit. #airwayhealth #tongueposition
Nasal Breathing is more important than you might think CONNECT2LOCAL.COM Nasal Breathing is more important than you might think - Steckelberg Dental
One thing that is often overlooked is how we breathe. Ideally everyone should be breathing through their nose for best airway health and for airway development in children. Snorkeling and dental appointments often can be the first time parents are aware of how their children breathe. Every time you take a breath, ideally your lips are together and we inhale through our nose. You can increase your oxygen saturation (SpO2) by 10% just by changing from mouth breathing to nasal breathing. This will take practice to master the change, but "to breathe more through your nose, you must breathe through your nose more." It might sound silly, but this one change can reduce airway battles in adulthood. The deep breathing exercises that snorkelers use can also help when you are working on the change from being a mouth-breather to a nasal-breather. We wish you the best on your journey and encourage you to ask Dr. Steckelberg any questions you might have at your next visit! https://tidetrek.com/snorkeling-how-to-breathe/

Dr. Steckelberg believes that continuing education is very important. Today and tomorrow she will be attending the virtual American Association of Dental Boards’ Mid-Year Meeting. This meeting's topics include COVID-19, Sleep Apnea, Anesthesia, Opioids and Telehealth. It will be a busy couple of days, but Dr. Steckelberg looks forward to learning more about all of this. Make sure to ask her about the AADB meeting when you see her next!

Heads up! Family time is super important to Dr. Steckelberg. Next week is LPS's Spring Break and we have modified our work schedule that week. Dr. Steckelberg is only seeing patients Monday, March 8 and Tuesday, March 9. Staff will be in the office on Wednesday to catch up on everything necessary to keep a dental office running. The office will be closed Thursday & Friday, March 11 and 12. Thank you for understanding!
Dr. Steckelberg enjoys learning more about dentistry, even if it is not always in-person. At her most recent class, ingredients were mailed to the participants to make Mint Juleps! That was a first for Dr. Steckelberg, but a fun twist! #LincolnDentist
It's time to Celebrate! We are celebrating Dental Assistant Appreciation Week this week with the ADAA's theme "Our Heart Goes Into Every Smile." Thank you to Taylor and Jan for all you do to keep Dr. Steckelberg and our patients smiling! You are both amazing and we feel blessed to get to work with you. Did you know that Dr. Ogden took Dr. Steckelberg to her first Husker Volleyball game? It was the 2008 NCAA Championship Final Four games in Omaha and it was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! If you get a chance to watch the Husker Volleyball team play in person, you definitely should go. Tonight, we will cheer loudly from the Steckelberg house - Go Big Red!!!

Question for you: Let's call it "Help a gal out, Wednesday. " The story that I heard was that this General Store in Fremont, Nebraska, was ran by Fred Henry Steckelberg, Jr around 1940. My father-in-law fixed this old photograph years ago and gave a print to me when I opened my dental office, with me being a "Steckelberg" business owner and all. I'd love to know if there are any stories to be shared about this General Store? Or the owners? #helpagaloutWednesday #steckelbergdental

Flashback Friday: One year ago today, we remember placing special orders for treats from the neighborhood bakery. Our favorite bars were decorated like this for the "Quarantine time" last year. One year ago today, it was a very hard Monday. It was the first full week of the COVID shutdown, when we were recommended to only treat dental emergencies until further notice. It was extremely overwhelming. The challenges of the shutdown helped me realize how important my relationships are with my Dental Colleagues. We would often be discussing strategies via text messages before 6:00am. I could not have made it through this very dark time without my family, my dental colleagues, my friends, my patients, and the leadership within the Nebraska Dental Association. I just wanted to take a moment to extend my gratitude for all the support I have received this past year. I am truly blessed to be a dentist in Lincoln, Nebraska. Thank you! {2018 Steckelberg Family photo - not a photo from shutdown}
