Do you want to speak Italian more easily and confidently by the end of 2020? One of the most common topics people discuss is what they have watched lately on their TV. But whether the discussion is about a made-for-TV series or a classic movie, the conversation usually revolves around the same topics: our likes and dislikes, intriguing points in the plot, and, of course, those fabulous actors. Insalata del giorno. Panzanella salad is a fancy name for bread and tomato salad, made special by the addition of fresh buffalo mozzarella balls and extra virgin olive oil. I used left over garlic croutons, some fresh basil that has managed to survive in my herb pots and the last of my cherry tomatoes to make this salad. Optional: minced red onion and red wine vinegar. #panzanella #panzanellasalad #insalata #insalatadellorto #insalatamista #insalatadipomodori #insalatadelgiorno #insalatadellacasa #insalatadelmioorto #insalatadipomodorini #insalatadipomodori #insalatadipomodoro #tomatosalad #tomatoandmozzarella #tomatoandbasilico #tomatoandmozzarellasalad #tomatoandbreadsalad #cherrytomatoes #cherrytomatorecipes #cherrytomatorecipes #italiansalad #italiansalads #saladsofinstagram #saladrecipe #saladrecipes #saladrecipeshealthy #foodblogger #foodbloggersofinstagram #tomatosalad🍅 #tomatosalads #tomatosaladseason @urban.garden.guide @burpeehg

Why Your Family Name Was Not Changed at Ellis Island (and One That Was)
Sicilian Family Tree
October 14, 2016 at 10:46 AM ·
This is something I hear all the time. In fact, just got an email yesterday where the person said her ancestor's name was changed at Ellis Island. Ship manifests were made at the port of origin, not at Ellis Island. Therefore, the name on the original manifest is actually more likely to be the original name (and spelled correctly too) than alternate names you find in US records. Keep in mind, you have to look at the ORIGINAL ship manifest, not at the name given in an index or a transcribed record. https://www.nypl.org/blog/2013/07/02/name-changes-ellis-island#.V_6ZRRHho3k.facebook

Kathryn Occhipinti, MD, for Learn Travel Italian.com Do you want to speak Italian more easily and confidently by the end of 2020? Many Italian verbs have a similar use to those in English, which simplifies translation from one language to the other. However, many times the use of an Italian verb will vary from the usual English connotation. And in many situations, the same verb can have many different meanings in both languages, depending on the context. [ 2,113 more words ]

Ciao a tutti! Since we in America are all celebrating Thanksgiving a bit differently this year, I thought I would post a turkey recipe I've made before for small gatherings. My Italian-American turkey recipe uses a full, boneless turkey breast, which is flattened, spread with a ragù of Italian sausage and cremini mushrooms, and then rolled up to form a log. ...

An Italian-American Turkey Recipe for Thanksgiving 2020
Italian-American Turkey Roll. Full recipe on Conversational Italian blog at top. Great for small gatherings. Freezes well if you only use half (like I will). Make the pancetta, Italian sausage and cremini mushroom ragù: chop 1/2 onion, carrot, celery and soften. Add 1/4c diced pancetta and 2 sausages. Sauté chopped mushrooms separately and add to sausage. 2Tb flour and 3/4 milk. Prepare turkey breast by removing skin, cutting to even and pound to flatten. Add filling, roll and tie. Insert thermometer that comes with breast. Brush with olive oil, salt/pepper. Cook 1 hour 400 then 325 until done. Let rest, cut and serve. #osnap #foodblogger #foodbloggersofinstagram #foodbloggers #thanksgivingdinner #thanksgiving2020 #thanksgivingturkey #thanksgivingturkeyrecipe #thanksgivingturkeyroll #thanksgivingturkeyloaf #italianamericanfood #italianamericanthanksgiving #festadelringraziamento #festadelringraziamento2019

NIAF sends condolences to Lidia Bastianich and her family for the loss of her mother, Erminia Matticchio, who passed away at the age of 100 on February 14.
“We are deeply saddened to hear of Erminia Matticchio’s passing,” said NIAF Chairman The Honorable Patricia de Stacy Harrison. “Together with her daughter, Lidia, Erminia brought the love and joy of family and food—the pillars of the Italian American experience—to the homes of millions. She will be missed by her family and millions of people throughout the world.”

Dominic Candeloro
February 25 at 1:25 AM ·
“Reconstructing Italians in Chicago:In Search of Roots and Branches” was released in 2011 as “a sampler of the best writing on the subject of Italians in Chicago,” according to Dominic Candeloro, who spearheaded the book’s publication by Casa Italia.
The first edition has sold out, and a 10th anniversary edition has now been published by Amazon at a much lower price, both in print and on Kindle.
The new edition includes an introduction by Candeloro and Fred Gardaphe, an associate editor at Fra Noi and professor at Queens College. References have been updated, some of which direct readers to YouTube, where 10 years of IA Literati presentations can be viewed.
In addition to scholarly works, the book contains fiction and poetry from renowned authors like Tony Ardizzone, Robert Benedetti, and Tina DeRosa that delivers powerful emotional and personal truths about Chicago Italians.
Perhaps the most riveting entries are the autobiographical accounts that paint diverse portraits of what it was like to grow up Italian in different decades of the last century. Those authors include Fr. Gino Dalpiaz, Anthony Fornelli and Rose Ann Rabiola Miele.
The volume is packed with photos, illustrations and even a few recipes. In short, it has something for everyone interested in tapping into the shared experience of growing up in Chicago as an Italian American.
The print and Kindle versions of the book are available at amazon.com for $15.99, or it can be ordered directly through Casa Italia by emailing casalibrary@gmail.com.

French onion soup for a wintry day! Make onion soup and croutons and finish in a deep dish casserole or deep dish ceramic pie pan that is broiler safe. For the soup first slowly caramelize 5 cups of thinly sliced onions in 3 Tbs butter and 2 Tbs olive oil in a heavy deep pot over low heat. After onions have started to cook add 1 tsp salt and 2Tbs sugar, mix and cook covered until soft and lightly browned. Add 3Tb flour and stir 3 min. Add 8 cups hot beef stock and 1/4 cup dry white wine, salt and pepper and cook 30-40 min. For croutons: cut French bread 1” thick, cook 325° for 30 min, brush with olive oil, cook 15 min, brush with garlic, cook until lightly browned. Top with mixture of coarsely grated Gruyere or Swiss (1 cup) and Parmesan (1/4 cup). Bake in oven separately or on soup at 325° until cheese melted and then in broiler until brown. #osnap #soup #soupseason #frenchiesofinstagram #frenchonionsoup #frenchsoup #frenchsoups #onionsoup #foodblogger #foodbloggers #foodporn #foodpornfrance
