A native of the Chicago area, Dr. Sun did his undergraduate studies at Northwestern University, where he also graduated with honors with a Masters degree in Neurobiology and Physiology. He attended Rush Medical College in Chicago and completed his orthopedic surgery training at Jackson Memorial Hospital / University of Miami in Florida. From there, he continued his sub-specialization training with a hand and upper extremity fellowship at the University of Washington.
