A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for southeast portions of the forecast area and is valid until 6pm. Patchy freezing drizzle is starting to impact roads and untreated surfaces.

Saturday 3PM Update: Winter Storm Warning expanded.
Rain will change to snow this evening and tonight, becoming heavy for portions of the area between 8pm and 3am tonight. Snow will be lighter on Sunday, but northwest wind gusts up to 45 MPH will lead to blowing snow and poor visibility.

We are increasingly-focused on a good chance of at least SOME wintry weather in our coverage area this weekend, starting as early as Friday evening (in some places) and perhaps lingering into the daytime hours Sunday (for some). Because the brunt of this storm system is still at least two days away, our confidence in the finer details is still rather shaky, especially regarding exact amounts of snow and ice, and where the transition zone between mostly snow and ice, and mostly rain will set up. As for things we are fairly confident in, for one, confidence is high that our ENTIRE coverage area will see at least some precipitation. In fact, parts of the area could see more than 1 inch of total liquid equivalent precipitation. VERY GENERALLY speaking, areas north and west of the Tri Cities (including towns such as Ord and Lexington) currently appear most favored to have more impactful freezing rain and perhaps receive several inches of snow this weekend. Meanwhile, southeast portions of our local area (including places such as Hebron and Beloit) are most favored to see predominantly rain, with only minimal chances for accumulating snow or ice. In between these two areas, including right over the Tri Cities, the door is wide open to see a variety of precipitation types, including at least a little snow, along with sleet and freezing rain. As for winds, they do not look very strong during the first part of the weekend, but will likely pick up out of the north Saturday afternoon into Sunday, with sustained speeds of at least 20 to 30 MPH and gusts to around 40 MPH likely. As is always the case as storm systems get closer in time, we will constantly be updating our snow and ice forecast with the latest information. Please stay up to date with the latest forecasts for this weekend (especially if you have travel plans).
