On this day in 1877, the United States Patent and Trademark Office in Washington D.C. caught fire. The fire destroyed thousands of drawings and models, but no patents were completely lost. While the building has since been rebuilt, this disaster remains to be an important part of USPTO’s history. From NASA engineer to toy inventor, Lonnie Johnson holds many achievements. In 1990, Johnson developed the Super Soaker water gun – one of America’s best-selling toys. Additionally, Johnson crated the Johnson Thermo-Electrochemical Converter (JTEC) to convert heat into electricity. To this day, he holds 100 patents, with over 20 more pending.
