*** September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month ***
Opioids are currently the primary treatment for the chronic and acute pain caused by sickle cell disease. But the rise in opioid-associated deaths has prompted physicians to prescribe them less frequently, leaving sickle cell patients with fewer options.
Acute pain is one of the main symptoms of SCD, a genetic blood disorder. Numerous episodes of acute pain can lead to chronic pain in these patients. According to the authors, SCD patients seek out and use marijuana to either avoid opioid use or because other medications are ineffective in relieving their pain.
In Ohio, Sickle Cell Disease is a qualifying condition. Do you, or someone you know, suffer from SCD? Let our team of board certified doctors help you find alternatives.

Cannabis has been shown to be effective in helping sickle cell disease patients manage their pain and regain some semblance of a normal life. Cannabis can not only ease the emotional distraught caused by a sickle cell disease diagnosis, in the form of anxiety or depression, but it is also effective in combating the severe pain that patients go through. In a 2005 study of 86 sickle cell disease patients, 52% of the participants used cannabis for pain relief, and 39% said that it helped them manage depression and anxiety.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a condition of the blood which affects around 10,000 Americans.
Cannabis offers a wide range of medicinal and therapeutic benefits that can help give SCD patients a better quality of life. Cannabis is known for its antidepressant properties and mood-lifting characteristics, which can help ease the emotional and mental issues that come with being diagnosed with SCD. Additionally, cannabis is also a potent natural analgesic and can help patients manage the debilitating pain that comes with SCD without the side effects of prescription medications and opioids.

- loss of appetite
- anxiety
- insomnia
caused by a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.
If you, or someone you know was diagnosed with breast cancer, and are looking for alternative ways to ease the side effects, schedule your appointment today.

Happy Halloween from Summit Releaf!
Let's have a little fun. Tell us below which one best describes you.
*** October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month ***
As of January of 2020, more than 3.5 million women in the United States have either been treated for or are currently being treated for breast cancer, and over 42,000 women’s lives are expected to end because of it before 2020 is over.
Harsh treatments can put you into remission, but it can also make you feel worse than the cancer itself. You can be put on additional medications to decrease the negative side effects, but there are natural ways with the potential to help. While medical marijuana is not a treatment for breast cancer, it has effectively eased the discomfort in some patients for such issues as pain, nausea, hot flashes, anxiety, insomnia, and loss of appetite.
If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with breast cancer, let us help you look at your options. Call us today.

Medical marijuana acts as an appetite inducer in chemotherapy patients?
Chemo can cause nausea, and sometimes make food taste metallic and terrible, and for other people cancer can make people lose their sense of taste. THC, or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, found in medical marijuana actually curbs nausea and helps patients improve their sense of taste.
