If you’re nearing age 60 and have back pain, don’t assume it’s a normal part of getting older. You could be affected by a spinal compression fracture.
Backaches and pains can be a sign that small fractures are occurring in your vertebrae – the bones that form your spine. Soft, weakened bones are at the heart of this problem. Compression fractures are often caused by bone-thinning osteoporosis, especially if you are a postmenopausal woman over age 50.
When bones are brittle, everyday activities can trigger minor spinal compression fractures. When you bend to lift an object, miss a step, or slip on a carpet, you can put your spinal bones at risk of fracture. Even coughing or sneezing can cause compression fractures in more severe cases of osteoporosis.
After a number of small compression fractures, your body begins to show the effects. The small hairline fractures can eventually cause a vertebra to collapse — called spinal compression fracture.
These tiny fractures can permanently alter the strength and shape of the spine. You lose height because your spine is shorter. Most compression fractures occur in the front of the vertebra, which causes the front part of the bone to collapse creating a wedge-shaped vertebra. The back of the bone is unchanged because it’s made of harder bone. This creates the stooped posture called kyphosis, or dowager’s hump.
About two-thirds of spinal compression fractures are never diagnosed because many patients and families think the back pain is merely a sign of aging and arthritis. In fact, many people put off seeing a doctor because they don’t realize what’s wrong, experts say. But if osteoporosis isn’t treated, it can lead to future fractures — and possibly more severe compression fractures. Osteoporosis significantly reduces but does not eliminate the chance of developing another compression fracture.
Today Summit Spine & Joint Centers salutes all the military personnel that have served in the United States Navy.

You’ve probably heard about PRP therapy, but what is PRP exactly?
Platelet-rich plasma (#PRP) therapy is a form of #regenerativemedicine in which your body’s own platelets are extracted from your blood and used to heal new or old injuries. Platelets are a component of your blood that can help heal tissues due to unique proteins called growth factors. Basically, PRP is plasma (the liquid that makes up the majority of your blood) that is rich in platelets, which may help accelerate healing and reduce pain.
The platelets in PRP therapy are thought to help heal tissues by using one of the body’s own healing mechanisms—platelets—in concentrated forms where chronic or acute injuries exist. The growth factors platelets contain help accelerate the body’s natural healing process.

For years, Sonia, a US Army Veteran, experienced excruciating pain and complications from a shattered ankle, an injury suffered while serving in the Army. “I wanted them to amputate my foot,” Sonia said. “That’s how bad it had gotten.”
Sonia came to Summit Spine & Joint Centers looking for relief. Dr. Amit Patel implanted a neurostimulator in Sonia’s lower back to intercept pain signals traveling between her ankle and her brain. Sonia’s pain was reduced dramatically, by 90 percent. “It’s really changed her life,” Patel said of the procedure.
Sonia found out the medical device was manufactured by Medtronic at a plant in Puerto Rico – where Sonia’s mom, Sulma Colon, just happens to work. Sonia tracked her device’s serial number, only to learn her device had been assembled by her own mother. As a $125 billion company, the odds of this happening are nearly impossible. “I lost it, I cried, I screamed,” Sonia said. “I just kept saying, ‘Oh my God mom, oh my God.’”
Sonia’s mother spent years wishing she could do something to help her daughter with her pain. Now she has.
We are honored to provide real pain relief solutions to all veterans, as well as anyone suffering from debilitating pain.

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis is a degenerative condition of the lumbar spine. As we age, the soft tissue, or “discs,” between the vertebrae (bones that make up the spine) become worn down. This causes the spinal canal to narrow, which can put pressure on the nerves in the lower back. This pressure can lead to radiating leg, buttock and/or groin pain. People with LSS typically cannot walk farther than 50 feet without feeling this pain and find relief when sitting down or leaning forward. A solution to LSS is Vertiflex’s Superion® Indirect Decompression System. This is a quick, outpatient procedure performed by our experienced physicians in one our many ambulatory surgery centers.

Radio Frequency Ablation (RFA) is an injection procedure used to reduce chronic nerve pain, specifically facet joint pain or sacroiliac joint pain caused by arthritis or other degenerative changes, or from an injury. This minimally invasive procedure is performed with a local anesthetic and mild sedation. During this procedure the nerve is heated, nerve impulses are diminished and the pain is reduced or alleviated. The treatment’s impact varies among individuals; however, it can last up to two years.
